Need help with chicken wound

Okay thanks, I just gave her 1 ml of safeguard and I’ll do the rest of my chickens tomorrow. Could worms be the reason she is panting?

Possibly if she is loaded up with worms, which I suspect. There are only two reasons why worms are excreted; there isnt anymore room in the digestive tract and have nowhere else to go except out the rear end. OR, they are too old and are dying or are dead and excreted.

Watch the chickens carefully following the worming. Heavy loads can cause issues from crop slow down due to obstruction from too many worms to be absorbed and digested by the intestines to shock. Be prepared to treat a crop issue if the crop shows signs of not emptying overnight. But watch especially for signs of shock - lethargy, imbalance, leg weakness, overall drunk-like behavior. Treat with electrolytes immediately if you see these symptoms. Shock can kill quickly.

Thanks, this is really helpful. I have about 40 chickens total and I’m going to worm them all tomorrow and spend the day cleaning the coops and watch them as much as possible. I had a chicken die about a month ago and it had vent gleet and sour crop, so I wonder if the worms had something to do with that. What can I do in the future to prevent worms?

Intestinal worm oocytes are present everywhere in bird feces. Some earth worms harbor the oocytes, and they can get into a chicken when it eats an earth worm. Not all earth worms have these, so don't panic when you see your chicken enjoying a juicy worm.

The best way to prevent worms is to keep a clean run and coop. Chickens are infected with worm eggs when there are a lot of feces building up where they scratch for bugs and grit. They ingest the worm eggs, and depending on how heavy the population is, the chickens will have a corresponding load of intestinal worms.

Practically speaking, beyond keeping poop picked up, a regular worming program is an adequate method of controlling these parasites. My preferred method is to watch the chickens for early signs of worm infestation and not worm until I see those signs. Even better, to avoid worming needlessly, collect random poop samples from the flock every six months and have your regular vet run a fecal float test. This is the all around most practical method. That way you aren't worming needlessly and risking worms becoming resistant to the worming meds.

Update: the hen is slowly getting better. She has stopped panting and her poop is back to looking normal. She still isn’t moving around like normal but she can walk a few steps off balance before she falls over. Before she would fall forward every time she stood up so she’s at least making progress.

I wormed my chickens and ducks this weekend, but I also have guineas and I haven’t been able to worm them because they are basically wild. Is there a poultry dewormer that I can put in their feed or water?

I was checking various sites for Prohibit levamisole powder, and it appears to be out of stock at most stores online. @dawg53 do you think this one would work for the OP:
