Hi all! I'm hoping someone can give me some advice, or at least ease my mind. Our local park was going to euthanize their geese because they had too many. We rescued a mated pair about a month ago - Gabby and Gideon. We have about 12 acres next to a very large lake. We've been feeding them and letting them get used to their environment. We have a lot of Canada geese, so they were fitting in quite well. Thursday I was late to feed them, so they came up near the house and waited. Gabby spent most of the time laying down, but they both ate well and went back to the lake. Friday I heard Gideon honking - a lot - and went down to feed them, but Gabby was no where to be found. I was panicked because Gideon is very protective of her. He continued swimming around the bay for the rest of the day honking, but he would calm down and come to me and eat from my hand. Friday, I found him at our next door neighbors in front of their boat house. He greeted me and ate. Still no Gabby. But when our dog went to chase him, instead of flying off, he stood his ground and challenged her and charged her. So, here is my dilemma. The area around the boat house is wooded. Lots of places to hide. Gideon's actions make me think Gabby is near and he is standing sentry duty. However, he is also very intent on his reflection. He taps the glass doors and sleeps right in front of them. I put straw down and a bowl of water and I've been continuing to feed him. Is this normal behavior for a gander with a nesting mate? Or, is it possible he's lost Gabby and now fixated on his reflection? The Canada geese are with him daily, so he has company, it just isn't Gabby. I don't know how to help him? Is this normal, is he ok?
