Need input! Teen with Thyroid issues, update

Speckled hen is right. Thyroid trouble often does go with carpal tunnel syndrome and cholesterol problems. My Mom and her side of the family have defective thyroid glands, both hypo and hyper. Of my generation only one cousin has the problem so far.
If I understand it right a TSH of 4 is at the top end of normal. Mine is about 4 and I was not given any treatment and though I sleep a lot I am basically well.
It is a common condition in Derbyshire in the UK as it is an area deficient in iodine. Goitre is referred to as Derbyshire neck.
Other symptoms would be weight gain though eating little, poor memory, and hair loss for under active thyroid.
Weight loss though eating well, bulging eyes, and irritability for over active thyroid.
My Mom is 80 and has taken thyroxine since she was 35. She is very well and active for her age.
Hope everything goes OK. It needs proper diagnosis and treatment.

*well- my husband can vouch for the irritability, and kids especially tend to notice the eye thing!! One little girl I was talking to asked & horrified her mom by asking!! LOL! I PROBLY wouldn't sleep @ all except for magnesium, getting enough a.m. Sun & 1/2 mg. of melatonin when it's really bad. Of the 3, morning sunlight REALLY helps-- another good reason to have chickens! and to live in Florida or California I suppose! (She said sounding snobby but not meaning to be!!)

I just read that you are in a holding pattern for a while until you can get to another doctor.
If I were you I'd get her on the diet and vitamin/mineral supplements I posted earlier A.S.A.P.
If nothing else it will provide her with an ample supply of essential nutrients she needs daily and may help her cope and feel better about her current condition.

Every, nurse, doctor, or what ever that has posted here will agree that supplying proper nutrients can only help your situation.

And a lot of people agree we do not get the proper amounts of essential nutrients from our food supply due to improper cooking, additives, preservatives, too much salt, sugar etc...

A person should NEVER take just one single vitamin or mineral supplement without taking a good mulitvitamin to go along with it. Vitamins and minerals work together to aid absorbtion by the body and they are 60 to 70% more effective if taken with a multi than if just taken by them selves.

*I agree with taking a multi- don't worry bout that--AND enzymes to aid absorption. The problem is that to get the basics plus the extras I need for the hyper-thyroidism I'd need custom formulization. Can't afford that, so I go the old-fashioned route, adding extras individually. I CAN'T however take Multis on an empty stomach, & I cringe when I hear people recommend it-- Makes me throw up, & my mom is the same way.

I started having trouble with my hands late last year. I thought it was from the Actenol I was taking. Well, I have trigger finger.... well actually trigger fingers in both my hands...thumb and ring fingers. Going to have surgery soon. But, my doctor said it's from hypothyroidism. Dr. said it could effect all my fingers eventually. Luckily, it's a very simple thing to fix.

Don't take vitamins on empty. fats and enzimes are needed for absorbtion.
Don't take vitamins at bed time, they may keep you up at night.

Milti minerals need to be on empty or at least 30 to 45 min after eating.
Minerals are ok at bedtime.
Drink lots of water or diluted juice, that will help.

And it's almost impossible to fit everything you need into one pill.
That's why I suggest taking the multi in addition to the individuals.

Without the multi the individuals are less effective. It's a team effort.

I have a rebellious teen (imagine that) who won't eat most of what is set before her if it looks the least bit nutritious.
She does take a multi vitamin. She usually eats a bit before she takes it, but doesn't take it every day. I'll work on getting some of the other suggestions into her. Some sound like they could be snuck in. I cook with olive oil quite a bit, so I know she's getting some of that inher system.
We eat as much multigrain products as I can find to replace more processed stuff. She's not eating much fruit at all which drives me CRAZY! She definitely gets her recommended veggie intake set before her when the garden gets cranked up each year, but doesn't always eat what she should.

About the only thing I feel really good about in her diet is that she drinks plenty of milk. I rarely allow sodas and she doesn't like juice. So she drinks a lot of expensive Lactaid milk every day...

I don't recommend drinking milk.
Hormones and antibiotic residue from the cows pollute all but raw organic milk.
Humans older than abut two arent designed to drink milk. Babys are only supposed to drink mother's milk.

Drinking milk on a regular basis can lead to food allergies that are verry difficult to diagnose because of subtle, seemingly-non related simptoms.

All those signs and comercials that say to drink milk are misleading. You can get more vitaminC , D, and calcium from plants and nuts. Take a look at the fine print on those food piramid things that end up in all schools...Who do you think PAID for those things?

Don't get me wrong, occasional milk is OK, and cooking with it is OK, as well as yogurt etc. But If you drink milk, drink it because you like it, not because you think it's healthy.

*It's really awesome that she doesn't like soda! I've seen some people who drink nothing but and all that phosphorus is HORRIBLE for your bones. Pro'bly one reason our generation is starting to show up with so much osteoporosis.! How to get K. to eat enough fruit, though-- I'm the wrong one to ask that; don't eat enuf myself! Like it o.k., but . . How many servings a day was that again??? On the multi issue, I pro'bly oughta mention- a lot of folks with Hyper-T can't convert beta-carotene into vit. 'A', so try to find her a multi w/ the real stuff. That might not be as easy as it sounds cuz beta-carotene is cheaper for manufacturers, BUT Olay is still using it & you ought to be able to get those @ grocery/pharmacy.

It's not that she doesn't like soda. She'd guzzle it if I let her! I just don't let her... or me, or my youngest.
I like that she drinks milk because I know she's at least getting calcium. I'd really rather she drank more water.

She used to eat apples all the time before she got her braces. They come off next month (after 4 years) and I'm hoping she'll eat more nutritious items once she gets used to having teeth that aren't aching all the time.
