Sad day today. I've made the decision to cull and process my cockerel. He's been increasingly human aggressive and rough during mating to the point he's harming the pullets. He's 9 months old.

I've never done this before and read some good articles on BYC with pictures but I'm not confident at all that I won't mess up removing organs. I tried finding some how-to videos but they're hit or miss. Does anyone have a good step by step YouTube video they can recommend for a first timer? I'd rather skin than pluck since it seems way easier. I plan on using the slow cooking or pressure cooking the meat so it doesn't have to be pretty.

Someone will be helping me cull but I'm on my own for processing.

Thanks for the help!

I haven't seen this one! Thank you very much. I guess I'll just have to brush up on my chicken anatomy because when you say "grab everything at once and pull" I'm not actually sure what "everything" is.

I may check back in with questions!
I grab the gizzard, once everything is loose, I pull the oesophagus, crop, & windpipe all out the same place.
You'll see how I get everything in the neck detached for that.

Wings do not skin well, especially as you get out toward the tip. I tend to cut off the last two joints of each wing and set them aside while dealing with the rest of the chicken, then decide whether to skin them or pluck them or discard them. (The answer usually depends on how much time I have left, since they don't have all that much meat anyway.)

Yes, after watching several videos of the skinning method, I think I've changed my mind and will do plucking for my first time. Skinning looks like it requires strength and finesse especially around the wings.

I plan on eventually doing meat birds so this cockerel will be good practice. And if I screw it up, at least I know I didn't let his death go to waste.

I'll try to remember to take pics so if I have questions, I can post them with examples.
