I am waiting for chicks myself but there are tons of knowledgeable members who will pop up soon. Also, look at forums and articles linked and indexed along the top of your screen for info.

Are there snakes that would eat chickens in Maryland? Mice can be a concern but there are some precautions you can take to help minimize the concern--putting food away at night, making sure there are no access holes to coop, etc.

I don't have advice on automatic coop doors, I have a traditional pop up door that I open and close daily, but it gives me some extra time with the hens so I can keep them semi-tame but also check to make sure no one is having any issues

I don’t know anything about chickens. Worried about mice and snakes. Any advice on that would be appreciated.

I am from Maryland. No chickens yet but I got all the things for the brooder. Researching all the coops.

Thoughts on automatic coop door?

Thanks for having me.
I dont have any advice on mice or snakes. But i have a ChickenGuard door and i have had so many problems with it. It doesnt open up or close half the time. I have to go out and open it. And the string to open it is always coming off track. And customer service was no help. So i wouldnt recomend going with a ChickenGuard.

Hello and welcome to BYC! I'm glad you decided to join us here.
We recently put a Pullet-Shut automatic door on our coop and I love it so far. I can't speak to it's longevity because when I say recent, I mean my husband only installed it a few days ago. It's a non guillotine style.

Hardware cloth is your best friend when it comes to mice and snakes!

Welcome to BYC! I am in Maryland and I haven't had any problems with mice and snakes. I've actually seen my chicken eating a snake. I haven't had an automatics coop door I don't think it'll ever get one because I enjoy going outside and opening the door. But that shouldn't deter you from getting one you should do the research and decide if it is good for you!

In my research I hear the snakes are attracted to and eat the eggs. Also, they might injure or kill chickens. I see at least 1-2 snakes each summer before having chickens. I hear hardware cloth will help keep them out.
