Need some hatching buddies - Hatching May 24-28

What kink of eggs did you get? I'm new to this, how can you tell if they are porous?

When you first get your eggs...you want to candle them to look for cracks. When I candled these the pores show up as dark spots ..sort of. Usually the shell feels rough also and not smooth. I've had some hatch but usually if they are TOO porous...they don't retain the moisture as they should during incubation.

On a happy note...the post office called me back...it appears the package of eggs was there after all and just missed. So I went back and picked them up...got 14 Blue/Splash/Black Jersey Giants and these eggs look GREAT! Total eggs; 27 and I will start tonight at 6pm. Due date: May 26th!! Feeling better now and not so "doomed"!

will have to "stack" the 3 extra eggs in my Brinsea until I candle on day 7 and remove any infertiles to make room.

Hey, I haven't had too much of a problem with the porous eggs. Don't give up on them just yet. You may be surprised. What kind of eggs did you get for the 100 bucks? I bet they are ok.

You must have a lot of ground to be able to have Jersey Giants. I would love to have some of those. I hear they are gentle giants.

Hey Stevenson..remember what I just went through with my eggs taking 5 days? Not to jinx you or anything, but anyway, I will let you know when I see something in mine. I got 28 eggs. So, hopefully, after talking with the guy that sent them on how long it took, and him saying that I should still get some because they were fresh, I don't feel too worried just yet. Trying Delawares again are you? I sure hope you do well this time. My one Delaware that kept from one of my hatches is getting big. She just may start laying by the end of next month...a Feb. hatch. Getting the pretty dark neck and tail. I'll post a picture.

I am seeing little embyos and eyes in my first MF.d'Uccles' that set last Sat.

Not the best picture of my little Delaware, she sneaks around me. But maybe the black will show up darker than the ground color. She is a real smart girl. She knows what's going on around her all the time.

Delawares are going to be my main breed. I have 18 that are 3 and a half weeks old from Paul Harter in Missouri. I also hatched one in this last go round - it did make it after a lot of TLC. I am really hoping to get 2 different lines going. I plan on trying to keep them separate for a couple of years and then combine the very best of both lines at some point to make my own line.

I was told that the eggs that haven't shown up yet were 3-5 days old the day they were shipped...so assuming they do arrive tomorrow, they would be 7-9 days old when they get into the incubator. Not ideal, but I still hope to get a few. I think I'll be really happy with 4-6 out of 24 at this point.

I got BBS Jersey Giants from Maria Hall...her reputation ups the price I guess. I also got some (not as expensive) from Wynette. We have 20 acres here but I don't let them free range...we live in the boonies. I have 3 coops however and two enclosed runs...and then about 1/2 fenced around the coops and run.
Stevenson I figure all of my eggs have been around 7 or more days old....you will get some from the hatch. You might want to ask future breeders to give you a confirmation number so you know when they will come. I wish all breeders would date the eggs...that was great.

Yes, like fife said, you will probably do ok. I asked the guy that sent mine, said the oldest were 6 days old, but more were fresh. hmmm...6+5=11 days old when I finally got them. I am going to candle a few tonight just to see. They were some that I didn't let set overnight either. Set them at 12 hrs. Have to let those air bubbles settle a little!
That Delaware up there came half way across the country to me..in an egg..

and now for the life of me can't remember the name, but do know that they came from AK.

May 1 I set my little giant full 42 eggs hoping for a good hatch. I do have 7 pekin duck,7 Buff Braham Bantam and the rest our from our flock of Black Jersey Giants and Buff Orphington. I will be candeling them this weekend to see any signs:p of life. I have decided when I take the eggs out of the turner I will put the duck in my other giant and set them for another week. I hope this works:rolleyes:
