Need some hatching buddies - Hatching May 24-28

oK...THEY have messed up your order it sounds like. I would notify your breeder/shipper. Something is wrong and it isn't on your end.

Well, I can't complain too much because this was to make up for the last set of eggs that didn't do well (spent three days in the mail and only got one of thirteen to develop). I didn't complain last time, but she asked me to keep her informed and when I told her how poorly things were going she offered to give me more for the cost of shipping. The problem is though that I felt bad and went ahead and bought $20 additional eggs as well so she wasn't sending them to me completely for free. It's not the end of the world, but I was really looking forward to getting the barnevelder and ameraucana eggs (she also included some lavender orpington and welsummer as well).

I have 12 eggs in the incubator now and have 40 chicks getting big in my garage. If things go well with this hatch, I should have nearly 50 chicks. I am done hatching this year after this round...and I am not spending any more money on eggs/chicks - I have spent WAY too much already. I suppose this will have to be where I start. Next year I will try hatching a lot of my own. I should have plenty of Delaware and Speckled Sussex. Since my numbers aren't what I thought they would be, I may go ahead and keep a roo from another breed.....dominique, new hampshire, or partridge rock....we'll see which one I like the most of these three.

The main thing that I learned from this is that I should not order eggs from across the country anymore. I would say around 10 hours away (drive time) will be about as far as I will order in the future.

On a positive note...because I now have a staggered hatch I have been looking into acquiring a cheap incubator for hatching purposes. My wife's best friend's grandfather (yes, i know...long chain of people) used to hatch quail. He is no longer able to do so and has two of the little giant style incubators he is going to give me! Score!

This is my last hatch also...next year I plan to hatch only my BBS Orpingtons and BBs Blue Jersey Giants. I got my eggs from as close as possible...Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and New Hampshire (the farthest). It got here quicker coming from Ohio than it did from 3 hours south of me in Michigan!! Go figure.
Good luck on your hatch....if the eggs come tomorrow I assume you will try again since they are available?

Jumping in on this thread. This has been quite a hatching season. My husband believe that I have finally lost my mind over my chickens

I have one RIR rooster who is in charge of 30 beautiful girls (most RIR, 6 Red stars, 3 Blue americaunas, 2 buff orpingtons, 1 white leghorn). We want to have a good size flock with a few new hens each year so that we don't hit a time when we don't have eggs for us, for sale, and for charity ( food pantries love donated eggs, and if they keep track of how many dozen you bring for the year you can write it off on taxes)
Anyway, I have hatched 28 chicks on the first round this year. Bought three rooster (so they are genetically unrelated). And now have 37 eggs in the incubator due on May 20th. blue and green americaunas along with 4 eggs from my white leghorn.

Is there such thing as obsessive compulsive chicken collection disorder.........

(Rest easy, I do have room, time and money for everything I hatch.)

Mine are due May 23. this is my first go at incubating so i'm exited
Something Ive noticed all my EE pink eggs never develop. they are always fertile but nothing ever happens. is it the shape of the egg? they are all smallish and rounder rather than long. short and stout
It bugs me that I can't see through my green eggs. So I have a couple of EE's a couple or red hens mixed with EE and a couple of leghorns mixed with EE
I'm gonna be selling these to support my addiction haha?

Hi, everyone! Thanks Fifelakelooper for the compliment on my Cochins. They are sweet birds. I will probably have some hatching eggs to sell from them soon. I have quite a collection of chickens now. I just started selling my fresh eggs to my neighbors. I made a really pretty hand painted sign and placed it at the driveway entrance. I am meeting a lot of people that I probably wouldn't meet otherwise. I am having trouble keeping up with the demand for fresh eggs!

I am going to candle my eggs tonight to see if I have any Tadpoles! I get excited seeing them swimming around.

One of my Black Aust. hens went broody this week, she is trying to hatch a golf ball.

Yeah...I'll put them in the incubator...worst case scenario is that none will develop...but there is no harm in trying.

Again, remember mine took 5 days, and they were, as they put it, missent. I candled, Had to throw out around 7 of them. I started with 28. I have around 18 that are looking very fertile. Some questionable, so will wait a couple of more days. But, 17 or 18, not bad after the eggs sat over the weekend somewhere...and, some were already 6 days old when he mailed them..maybe those were the ones that I had to throw out..not sure, he didn't put the dates on them. I'm ok with what I have so far.
Tomorrow! They will come tomorrow! I just predicted that.

Just remembered something I was going to ask. I know they didn't have a tracking number for you, but it sounds like you know when they were shipped? Did you get something in your e- mail letting you know they were shipped? Anything to let you know? Maybe they didn't get shipped when said? That would be a good thing in a way. hmmmm............

Hello !

This is my first round at hatching. I set 14 Ameracauna eggs on 5/2 into my home made wine cooler bator. They looked REALLY lonely in there... I have room for 50... so I bought a dozen fertile eggs at Whole Foods, and 5 EE's, which I set on 5/3.

31 total. Tonight I candled them, and I have 13 yes and 1 maybe on the Ameracauna eggs. (Purchased from Mediazeal here in Sacramento.)
5 yes on the EE's
2 yes on the store eggs, with 10 maybes (They are really brown and hard to tell for sure. Maybe next time I will get the white ones!)

So, being equally conservative, I count 20 viable and developing chicks. I am going to candle again in 3-4 days and see if I can tell on the rest...
