Need some hatching buddies - Hatching May 24-28

Yeah...I'll put them in the incubator...worst case scenario is that none will develop...but there is no harm in trying.

Again, remember mine took 5 days, and they were, as they put it, missent. I candled, Had to throw out around 7 of them. I started with 28. I have around 18 that are looking very fertile. Some questionable, so will wait a couple of more days. But, 17 or 18, not bad after the eggs sat over the weekend somewhere...and, some were already 6 days old when he mailed them..maybe those were the ones that I had to throw out..not sure, he didn't put the dates on them. I'm ok with what I have so far.
Tomorrow! They will come tomorrow! I just predicted that.

Just remembered something I was going to ask. I know they didn't have a tracking number for you, but it sounds like you know when they were shipped? Did you get something in your e- mail letting you know they were shipped? Anything to let you know? Maybe they didn't get shipped when said? That would be a good thing in a way. hmmmm............

She found the tracking number and gave it to me. Apparently they were stuck in Louisville, KY for 2 days.....which is a real shame because that's only 1.5 hours away from my house. According to the tracking, they should be here tomorrow. I'll still put them in the incubator and see what happens.

Good morning May Hatchers!
Sounds like everyone on here is just as crazy as I am about chickens, chicks and hatching! I really could see how incubating could be addicting. I have lots of land but only 3 coops so I can't go overboard...at present I have 14 red comets purchased as adults for eggs last week and earning their keep. They will be (shhhhh don't tell them) butchered in the fall. Then I have 5 BBS Orpingtons that are almost 6 weeks old in coop #1. Then I have 13 BBS English Orpingtons in the basement brooder and 27 BBS Jersey Giants in the incubator. I will only keep the Orpingtons and Jersey's for breeding purposes and even those I will reduce greatly in number by selling some. (not killing those jewels).
My incubator is right on with RH and Temps at day 2....the flocks are doing well and weather should be decent today for N. Michigan. Happy woman here!

Well, I got a call from the post office this morning. They were sent on May 2nd at 2:23 pm cst and arrived May 7th at 8:30 am cst. I went and picked them up and have them sitting for about 4 hours before going into the incubator. One barnevelder egg was broken, but it looks like the rest are in pretty good shape. I have 17 eggs that may have a chance. 6 eggs were a week old when they were sent (she sent them as extras just to see if they might hatch.....very doubtful now since it took 5 days for them to get here). I will go ahead and put all 23 eggs in the incubator and check them around day 10 to see if I do have any development.

10-1 cracked eggs = 9 Barnevelder
4 Lavender Orpington
2 Blue Ameraucana
2 Blehm Black Ameraucana
6 Welsummer (that are as old as 12 days)

I will very happy at this point if I have 2-3 hatch.

Wish me luck

I wonder why it is taking so long for them to reach you. When I order my eggs they ship priority usps mail and I get them within 2 to 3 days even from accross the country. I really hope your eggs hatch for you. I am expecting 16 eggs in the mail today - indian runner and pekin duck eggs. If they don't make it today then they will be sitting in the post office over the weekend and I HATE that. Good Luck!

Stevenson, I candled again last night. I only had to throw out 8 so far! I haven't counted all that I know for sure are showing embryos..was tired from watching my others hatching..but I couldn't believe my eyes! So many after a 5 day trip, and a merry go round one at that with the P.O. Good luck to you! Oh, I started with 28.

Here's my Nankins with one of my Ameraucanas I woke up to. I have another Ameraucana now..looks to be more blue.. What? Wrong picture! Oh well, these just hatched two day ago! lol....

If I was that lucky....and the percentages were the same (excluding the 6 welsummer because they were old when they were shipped), I would be looking at having 12 that were developing. Let me tell you, I would be UNBELIEVEABLY happy with that!!!!!!!

Cochins..love them! Very sweet birds.

And, laughing at comment..tadpoles..they do look like little tadpoles at first.

Poor broody mama..best get something for real under her. Doesn't she know that golf balls don't hatch??

Hi All!

This is my first time incubating and hatching.

I set mine yesterday, so I hope I can join in. My eggs are BBS orpingtons that were shipped. There are 12 and all looked fine to me, but I didn't candle them. I don't have an egg candler, maybe I will try making one... I am very excited!! My incubator is in my kitchen, and I really think I am checking out the humidity and temp every hour. A little obsessed maybe... This will be a long 3 weeks!!
What is the best humidity for incubation period? I have read on different sites and in different books, and all seem to be different.
