need some ideas for winter watering methods

Interesting idea, but the heated dog bowl costs around $10.00 and has a thermostat to shut off the electricity when above freezing. I'd worry a bit about leaving crock pots or foot baths on 24/7 unsupervised.

My grandparents were raising chickens in the 1920's and didn't have electricity until the REA reached their area in the 1930's. They brought water out once a day and the birds trained to the watering time. Once or twice a day would suffice and if you put a heated ceramic tile in the bottom of a rubber bucket it would stay ice free a little longer.
