Need some input on choosing a chicken breed...

the 4-H-er's aren't really particular on it's rarity, except they don't want Ameracaunas (is that spelled right? I have no idea...) I personally am getting 3 standard cochins can't wait!

Over the past 30 years I have had many chickens. One of my many favorites is the Black Astrolop for gentleness, easy keeping and calmness. However, they are a large heavy bird and are not one of the best flyers. This is my personal observation only and others may have had different experiences, but I have found that the chicken hawks go for the smaller breeds however a ferral dog can corner a large hen against a fence or wall and kill it with ease. When the sun glints on their feathers they turn purple. Very pretty.

Sussex do well free ranging and can fly up in trees.But my best flyers where these girls

I was told they where Black Sumatra
and Sumatra come in BBS as well and free rang very well.

they fly very well, weight 5-6 lbs, but i'm not a good guess at weight
