Good day all!

Can anyone recommend a website where I can buy a quality coop for 6 hens? Carolina Coops are too expensive and I don’t want to buy from Amazon or Wayfair. Any thoughts? I may build one over the summer but first need to buy something of quality.

Any quality coop will be expensive. If you are able to built one, that is your best bet. In the interim, you can see if CL or FB marketplace have any used or unneeded coops or sheds available that you could use. If you have space in your garage or shed, etc, that can be a temporary space too, while building something.

We built a brooder for our first batch of chicks (6’x3’x2’tall). Due to weather issues, our coop build took a lot longer than planned. Those first chicks lived in that brooder for a long time, but after a certain point, they only slept in it, and spent their days in the fenced run (which had an area of shade and cover). since they don’t move around much when it is dark and nighttime, these cramped quarters were fine for sleeping since it was a temporary situation.

This one is for sale and 6x3.5 feet with four nesting boxes. Seems small for 4 boxes.
how does this look for 6 chickens? Looks like each chicken would have 3.5 sq ft.

I suggest building your own. almost any coop you buy as a kit is gonna be pretty flimsy. A used one of CL or FB will be better but difficult to move.

I have a small kit one that I bought strictly as a brooder.

Doesn't look too bad, looks sturdy....
...might be a good starter coop while you build a bigger one.
Lack of ventilation, but if you're handy that can be fixed.
They always put too many nests.

Oh, and....Welcome to BYC! @Dryfly

Hey DryFly
I’m looking at the ones Leonard Buildings are selling. We are gonna go small as well not over 6 yard birds. Hope you find a good one!

That coop looks pretty good for 6 chickens. I would suggest adding ventilation spots. Also they love to perch so adding perches would be great. If you girls are anything like mine you will probably have at least one who doesn’t lay in a hen box. They will all use 1 maybe 2 hen boxs.
