Need to knows (Emu)

I've a small river going through my fields and they're fenced but could do with a bit of height.

They won't be going in the field for a while so for the meantime it's my backyard until they age a bit more.

There will be a fence between them and my other birds so they can get used to eachother before they roam together

I'm collecting them tomorrow! Can't wait to see them:D

'If not, you're going to want to put one up.' Yup

And: I understand that Texas has had feral emus for decades -- released when the get-rich-quick-emoo-thang bit the dust.

' I've decided to buy the Emus sibling too. Now I will have a male and female' In the wild -- Taylor's research -- siblings may not be biological kin. But these incubated chicks? Are they genetic siblings? Anyone got thoughts on the deterioration of the U.S. emoo gene pool?

[Had a wild male down the back at dawn. He was really gettin' his Guuurk on: 'Gurk, gurk, Gurk, GURK, GGUUURRRKKKK!!, GGGUUUURRRRKKKK!!!!' Fairly unusual. I don't really understand this vocalisation yet. But only seems to happen in breeding-season.]

I love the 'hair-do' of chicks at this stage.

And there is cut timber visible in one pic: the chicks' world must be absolutely free of nails, screws, bits of glass, etc. Emus are notorious for ingesting shiny things.

They're in the area where all the geese roam (not the field) so it's full of grass and nothing else.

They're starting to eat out of my hand. I love them! Only problem is they prefer sleeping outside rather than inside. Tempsford are 15-17°C at night so I'm not too worried but still want them to sleep in!

'still want them to sleep in!'

Perhaps this is a defence thing. Perhaps not being able to bolt if necessary is a concern. Certainly folks have been observing for years that their emooz won't sleep in their (the emus' . . . ) coops.

Supreme Emu

[Tooshtoosh and Mrs. Tooshtoosh here today. And Tagalong Emu.]
