Neighbor dog attacks and kills Miss Peach -- I'm so lost right now.

Wow, your story made me cry. I feel the same way with my chickens. They are my pets and I truly love them. It seems Miss Peach had a wonderful life. Sorry for your loss.

The best you are going to be able to get is compensation for a vetbill. You may have to take them to court however. Get 2 copies of the bill, write a letter (nothing extremely emotional or angry - just stating facts - Miss Peach was a pet and family member, the dogs did not kill her but left her maimed, and the neighbors knew. You took her to the vet to seek medical attention which ultimately could not save her. You want monetary compensation for the damages the dogs did, however thats only a pinch compared to the irreplacable priceless chicken herself.) Take the letter and the copy of the bill - get it notorized take a picture of the notorization seal - make a copy. Mail or deliver one copy to the neighbors. If they get upset or angry or nasty - just walk away and tell them if need be you will try to get compensation through court.

I know you are hurting severely right now, but you are lucky to have neighbors who were responsible enough to leave you a note admitting their dog did it. Most wouldn't have. Things happen, I'm sure they didn't mean for their dog to get out - it doesn't sound like it. My dogs as diligent as I am to keep them in the yard, get loose and out of the yard sometimes and run loose for a bit before I can catch 'em. Please do not get ANGRY with the neighbors, be kind, sincere, and explain to them when you take them the letter and bill that Miss. Peach was a family pet - a member of the family just like many see their dogs.

Again I am so sorry

I am sorry for the loss of your beloved chicken. I too have known the pain of having dear pets killed by wandering dogs. The worst part is, they always manage to come back. Save yourself more heartache and build a welded wire coop for your duck before he gets killed too. I lost a whole chicken tractor full of POL pullets I raised from chicks that were the sweetest things. The stray dog or possibly dogs, ripped open the wire and killed all but two. One of the survivors is my favorite hen. I keep her locked in the barn unless I can be with her. The list of predators that eat chickens is terribly long. May you find a new girl to help you endure the pain of your loss.

I have no words that can ease the pain of your loss, except to say, "I'm so sorry."

I hope you can recoup the veterinary expenses and the cost of a new hen. While no hen could ever replace Miss Peach, the next hen will be just as special in her own right. I'm sure you would have no problem finding a BYC member near you willing to provide you with a new feathered friend.

At least your neighbor acknowledged it was their dog instead of leaving you to wonder what kind of animal attacked Miss Peach.

I'm so sorry! I can't come close to imagining the pain you're in right now. Just know that all of us at BYC are thinking about you and your family
