Neighbor dog

Your neighbor seem to be reasonable, at least so far.
She did communicate to you and asked about paying for any damage.

You must inform them (in person, phone, Facebook, etc.) that
you will take drastic action if their dog is trying to kill your poultry.
Keep a record of that communication.

If the dog comes and harasses your birds again...
Do this:
Keep a camera handy.
Take a pic or two of the dog in action.
Then shoot. Shotgun with slug is best.
Take a pic of the deceased dog.
Finally, inform the neighbor to come get the body, or bury it yourself if
they won't come.

This is a good way to handle it.
Fair to the neighbor, simple for you, proof is obtained, and problem is eliminated.

Good luck,
spot

If it were me, I would feel some responsibility to put up a hot wire or a sturdy fence the dog can't push through.
Not all steps have been exhausted before one has to resort to what are the steps to killing the potential threat. Dog has not actually hurt the livestock, though threatening through the fence is not ok, I get it. The dog does not belong on the OP's property, agreed. but no one wants to kill it if there is another way.
hotwire is cheap compared to any other outcome and will repel more than the dog. The coop will be safer from other possible critters as well. I live next to a neighbor who doesn't like it that I have chickens. Doing everything you can to keep the peace is very valuable. It's crummy to have a neighbor who is angry, resentful or heartbroken. Hotwire will keep the goodwill.
just my 2 cents

Whatever does this mean? Do I want to know?!

Shoot, shovel, shut up.

You may not want to know, but there it is.

If you can, set up a game cam. A picture is worth a thousand words. If at some point you need to do the dog in, you'll have proof in pics..Good luck....

Anyone have a good link on hotwiring the fence (which will only help when I'm not free ranging and no one has hopped the fence)? It's 2x4 hardware cloth over pressure treated 4x4s. Where there was granite (most of the poles) they were instead dug in with metal rods and cemented then a 4x4 attached.

Just so everyone understands it is illegal for a dog to run at large in Maine and further at all times the dog must be under control of its owner.

The OP is under no obligation to put up a fence to keep another person's animal off of their lot.

This past Saturday a visitor to one of my neighbors decided to let her dog do a bit of roaming (after all it is in the country you know), she was darn lucky that the dog scrammed when I told it to.

It was running from me when she came a calling for it.

She was apologizing all over the place after I told her that if it had gone for my birds she wouldn't have it anymore.

I'm glad your birds were ok.
I understand that the OP has the legal room to document and SSS.
However, I could relate to their reluctance to kill the dog if not absolutely necessary. So far she has neighbors who are taking steps to contain the dog and no neighbor war yet exists.
I was only saying that if it was me, I would find it cheaper to put up hotwire than to have the ill will with the neighbors from killing their dog PLUS the unhappiness I would feel at having to go to those final measures. I would just rather spend a few bucks for my peace of mind and peace in the neighborhood.
No criticism of those who find they have to take other measures to protect their flock, etc.
no offense intended. Just offering my thoughts
