Neighbor Dogs....again....UPDATE AT END OF THREAD!

I agree that electric works, but I dont agree with the logic. Why should I have to fork out more cash just to keep someone else's stupid mutt off of my property? If they cant control their pets, than buh buy puppy.Afterall, any domestic animal running wild out of control is "feral". I invest too much time and money into my livestock to have some mutt destroy it. I would expect the same if it was my dog causing problems somewhere else. It is the owners responsability to control their dog, not mine. I control my animals by the use of tie outs, pens, and training. I control other peoples animals by a steady rest and good trigger control.

Is there a way you can trap/catch the dog then take him to an animal shelter? If your neighbors have to pay a fine to get him out they may learn their lesson....or if they decide not to get him out he may be adopted by a family that will take proper care of him. Of course you run the risk that he will be put down, but that is an option you are already looking at.

Why I don't like spending the money, the bottom line is, it keeps my livestock and family safe from feral or neighbor dogs, coyotes, when I'm not home. Sitting with a gun is not practical when you have to work.

Much like putting up netting on top of your pen so hawks won't take your hens. Can we really afford to sit all day and not go to work just to watch for stray dogs and other predators. I don't know about all of you, but I have to go to work so I can afford to have my farm and animals. I put alot of value on them and I'll do whatever is necessary to keep them safe at all times, if I'm home or not.

Legally, the dog upped the ante when it tackled your son. Call AC back and DEMAND that they take this dog which is a THREAT to PEOPLE. If necessary, file a police report on the incident; file a case in small claims court demanding that the dog be confiscated and rehomed to an appropriate situation.

Don't forget breathing:D

Shoot the dog and bury it.If you don't want to bury it call AC and let them know you shot a dog that was attacking you. They might get another, but it might not brother your hens so much.

I would spend money on a fence. I have. I would not hesitate to call AC or get rid of animals trying to get in my yard over and over. It gets to be old real quick.I say end it now or resign yourself to chasing this dog off daily.

I agree and I do have fencing and other measures to protect mine as well. We cant control wild animals. My point was that I shouldnt have to go to such measures for domestic predators owned by someone else. Around here, if you can prove that a neighbors dog killed your chickens, the neighbor has to compensate you for your loss. It is up to you to figure a fair price. After you figure in feed, potential loss from lost egg production, etc., chickens get real expensive to someone with a "free" mutt. I wasnt trying to say that the fence isnt a good idea. I was saying that whne it comes to someone else's pet, I shouldnt have to prevent anything. If they cant control it, it has to go period.

Ofcourse, its easy for me to say that because my closest neighbor is a mile away.... and thats my grandma.

AC came to my house to check to see if MY dogs were licensed???? Really??!!??? Thank god they are, just one dog wont keep her collar on but I have it handy just in case. I told the lady that my dogs are not the issue it's the neighbors. She said well their not home not and the "dog" is in the house. I said "dog?....umm there is two, did you hear two bark?" she said no, I said then he is still loose and will be back on my property. "Did he kill your chickens" Me "not yet but it's just a matter of time and it is not just about the chickens it's about my son getting tackled on his way down to the bus and he carries a bb gun to protect himself" "well you said the dog is friendly and not violent" Me: "I dont care, he's jumping on my kid and knocking him to the ground and nipped at his jeans and jacket and ripped them" her "we'll see what we can do" then long story short I basically said they better do something, I was told to shoot if they attack my children or chickens and I will. If he gets my son again there will be big problems, whether it be a dead dog or a lawsuit against the neighbor and AC too for not doing there job. I also told them I had dates, times and names of who I spoke to and that I had pictures with dates and times of the dog on my property!!!

I have been where you are. There is this little old lady who looks like she is sugar sweet but is for lack of a better word an animal hoarder. We took her to court multiple times and eventually just gave up and put in electric fencing because when the judge ordered her to keep the dogs up or he would rehome them - she rehomed them and then got new dogs that were not under a legal directive so she could let them run loose then made it clear to me that she would keep repeating the cycle. Don't get me wrong I hated to put up that fence because I don't like being pushed into doing something but now that it is over I am glad to have it. BTW after all the agrivation I decided to locate my smelliest activities on the side of the yard closest to her house - she gets to look at my pig pen, goat barn, hen house and compost heap all summer - I guess I am passive agressive lol but I figure I had to pay for the fence and now she has to pay for making me put it up. What goes around comes around.

Edited to add: electric fencing is cheap and easy to put in if you use the step in posts anyone can do it in a day

wow, I would probably go to the local news with the names of the AC people I spoke to and the information that your son is being physically threatened by a dog and AC won't lift a finger. It could be a nice juicy story. I would just be going crazy. We have our own issues with the neighbor's dog and I will be happy to call AC and the police the next time it kills one of our chickens. We don't have the option of shooting on our property due to neighbor proximity but while I used to be opposed to the idea of shooting a dog for it's owners being awful, now I think I would absolutely shoot the neighbor's dog if I had the chance. I'd feel bad but our neighbors like yours don't really give a darn about what their dog does. It would send a pretty clear message of what will happen if they get another dog and let it roam. I wouldn't hide it either, I'd call AC tell them I shot the neighbor's dog who was harassing my child and livestock and tell them to come pick it up.

Goodluck you might just have to shoot the dog. It sucks but a neighbor's dog knocking over my DD would have me chasing it with a baseball bat and calling the police the FIRST time it happened.
