Neighbor mad about rooster...suggestions?

Pics
My suggestion would be that if your neighbor writes another letter or interacts with you regarding your rooster to say something along the lines of:

"This land is agricultural zoned which is clearly stated in x and by law you were to be made fully aware of when you signed for your home. According to x I am well within my rights to own a rooster however, you are not within your rights to harass me and commit obstruction of correspondence by opening my mail box which is a felony. I have your letter saved and documented all of our encounters including you placing your letter in my mail box. I would love for us to be civil neighbors who respect each other's rights, but if you continue to impose on mine I will be happy to defend my rights as not only a landowner in this county, but as a citizen granted basic human rights such as not having felonies committed against me. Now excuse me I need to go take care of my rooster. I hope you have a good rest of your day."

I have lived in my area for almost 30 years. We had no rules about roosters when we moved in. My neighbors moved in 20 years after me. At the time I did have a rooster and another neighbor further away had 8. But you could see my coop. I got the blame. He went to the HOA and changed it. I got a notice, this was years ago. I do still have a rooster, and have had roosters since. I hatch them let them grow, let them breed, then rehome them or eat them. I have also used ways of making them quiet. I don't let my birds out before 7. And if I have one that crows, I put him in a nest box with a door until a more reasonable hr. I do love roosters though.

I have compassion for light sleepers and shift workers: I am one and have been one. But you have to make your choices accordingly. I use earplugs and a HEPA air cleaner as a white noise machine so I can sleep. I don't expect my neighbors to accommodate my needs.

I am a light sleeper as well. I cannot stand loud music, tv, etc. but animals are not so loud.

my mean neighbors' first complain was about me feeding cats. we have a lot of mice and rats as we are surrounded by fields and abandoned houses. the same as the OP neighbors complained about the shade from a tree. some people don't really need any reason to be mean, they are mean by nature.

a guy from the island where I live had neighbors who complained about soooo many things and at some point they complained about roosters too. this guy got tired of their complains and started to put loud music at the hours that there were no restrictions and he was leaving home. he tortured them this way for about a month and they have never complained again till they moved out.

I was going to ask the same. I would NOT have done that. That is THEIR fault that they chose to plant it there and no OP’s problem. Of course too late now since it’s already been cut but yeah… I fear OP has been too considerate and accommodating and now this guy is taking advantage and bullying.
This too amazes me. Why? Does OP know how long it takes for oak trees to grow? How beneficial large trees are to the atmosphere and wildlife?

No one who plants a tree and wants it to survive and thrive plants it beside a large tree, unless it was done purposefully. I'm thinking this reaction shows there is no hope for the OP, just enjoy your neighbor's tyranny.

Hi all

I am at a bit of a loss on what to do at this point. Our latest neighbors moved in about 4 years ago and they are NOT friendly 🤦
Our community is zoned agricultural and we can do whatever we want out here. Some neighbors have anything from diesel mechanic factories on their property to owning actual lions and kangaroos etc. Property varies but lots are at least an acre and a quarter(what we have) up to 100s of acres. The name farms is even in the community name.

Most recent neighbors have never been friendly. We try to be considerate neighbors. Heard the man cursing out our dog because he was barking (during the day outside)so I bought him a shock collar for barking and call him in if he barks or if I ever see them outside.

Fast forward to the pandemic. I finally convinced my husband to let me and the kids live our dream and get chickens. We put the coop up way back on our property (our lot is long and narrow) the furthest point from any neighbors as our back yard neighbors have the most property. We of course hatched some roosters and we rehomed all of them...5 to be exact. I let the kids hatch a few more eggs to help with the grief of rehoming all these babies and of course we got two more roos. These roos were so awesome though and we loved them.

My side neighbor of course started to complain...you know the neighborly way. Mumbling curse words at me when I would come in my gate. (this guy has never been friendly once) and then having his wife text me. So we rehomed the dominate rooster that did crow fairly loud. However, that left us with the one we really want to keep. He is so small and gorgeous. A frizzle blue bantam polish. His crow is so weak the girls won't even play with him 😂. He only crows during the day.

I came home to a letter in my mailbox today that says YOUR ROOSTER CROWS FROM 6AM TO6PM EVERY DAY. THIS IS GETTING RIDICULOUS. Then it was signed by him.

I don't want anyone to be miserable in their own house and I believe he works second shift and sleeps during the day. That being said we will most likely never again find a rooster that is so quiet (he does not crow non stop and I can't even hear him in my house which is frame while theirs is CBS). I also think that if we get rid of the rooster it is not going to change our relationship with them at all and he will just find something else to complain about. If their any neighborly dialogue I might think differently.

Again we try to be good neighbors. We cut down a big oak tree near their property line so they could grow a tree they planted as we saw the shade from our oak would kill it. We keep our yard tended always and I do the best I can with the noise. The chickens are in Omlet coops with autodoors so they are locked up sunset to a few hours past sunrise now that it is cooler. Work days they are in the run and on weekends we let them out to free range.

I am just wondering what you would do. Should I rehome him? So far I have just ignored the letter. Feeling really sad today.
I would ‘t rehome the rooster. Your neighbor just seems like he is looking for something to complain about and is probably just a miserable person. He will just keep finding reasons to complain and you can’t accommodate his every demand.

We just bought a farm back in August. We loved the property and house but almost didn’t purchase it because the neighbor built their chicken coop and dog kennel along our driveway (literally touching our driveway) their rooster was crowing every time we were there and their dog was going nuts barking. The driveway made it like a tunnel and amplified the sound. I have a condition that causes panic attacks when I hear repetitive sounds so we weren’t sure if it was the right fit.

We weren’t sure if they did it because they didn’t like their previous neighbors but they definitely had a place on their property that would have been more considerate for their neighbors and that wouldn’t have put them out.

When we decided to buy it we planned to plant a hedge wall to kinda muffle the sound and just tell the neighbors we just wanted to dress up the property not to offend them. But once we were living on the property the crowing and barking died down and I barely notice it unless I am out on that side of the property.

Eventually they moved their coop because they wanted it closer to their duck coop. We let them borrow our tractor because it would make it much easier for them and we wanted to be neighborly. We also volunteered to help put up more chicken wire along the driveway because their chickens come onto our property and their young rooster has gotten into scuffles with our young rooster. If I didn’t have to worry about my “babies” I wouldn’t mind their chickens on my property (they are very 🥰).

My point is your neighbor knows they live in the country. They may have moved there for peace and quiet but they should have considered the fact that people will raise animals and its your right to do so. They need to find neighborly solutions to their own problem. Like creating their own noise barriers or having something inside that helps distract from the rooster crows like a noise machine.

Yeah and judging by the fact they’re in Florida, I hope it wasn’t a live oak 😭 not that it really matters now but yeah.
