Neighbors dog attacked my chickens!

I lost four of my hens to a stray dog that tunneled under the fence around their run last fall. (I spent over $1100 on vet bills on the survivors.)

I came upon the dog in their run and, unarmed, could only kick it until it crawled back under the fence and ran away.
We live in the county and I called the county animal control folks who told me 'if it happens again, you can shoot the dog'. I love animals but I would not hestitate to shoot a dog (or another animal) that was threatening the lives of my flock.
If you have warned a neighbor about their marauding dog and what steps you will take, I think that should solve the problem, if not, then I would get rid of the dog myself.

seriously, have a talk to your neighbour before their dog teaches yours bad habits....

if your dog and theirs are playmates then one day they will pack together, and if chicken is in one of the dogs menu, then you'll have a bigger problem coming.

I have had my niebors dog in my yard before and kill a few birds and ducks but ever since my cat has been roaming the yard i havent seen anything since. my cat loves HIS birds and he will do anything for them.
A dog tried to break through my fence once and my cat chased him right off. never seen him ever again!

I'm waging a war against my neighbors four black mutts, he was warned twice in the past about his dogs killing my chickens and they did it again the other day. I called him and told him No more warnings they are dead if caught on my place ever again, they killed our favorite B.O. "Big Ann", watched my wife grieve over her and now its time to pull a Jeramiah Johnson on these free ranging mutts.....no more "good guy Neighbor here"!!!!!!!!!!!

Seems to me that your neighbor totally missed the point . She should know that it is not acceptable for her dog to be loose and in your yard killing your chickens.....her replacing your dead birds is not the point. I can see how frustrated you must be...some people are just dense

You know he never offered to replace or compensate for any of them he just says well my dogs dont bother anything over here its hard to believe my dogs would do that! I guess because he doesnt have any animals but the four mutts he missed the point, But thats O.k. I feel I've been more than fair and wont loose any sleep when I do what I have to do and show him the other side I keep well hidden.
Thanks guys ,I guess you can tell I loved my B.O. Big Ann?

Don't give the dog any more "second chances." Like you, I have some really nice neighbors. But their dog came over and attacked my chickens 5 times over a year and a half. Each time I caught the dog, made the owners come get her, and issued a warning. It didn't do a bit of good.

Despite assurances that "it won't happen again" and "we'll keep her kenneled unless we're out with her," she came back for a second kill just 3 days after the previous one. She's now buried out near my pond.

I don't know if it's reasonable to be upset over this or not, but it's been eating at me.

Of course its reasonable to be upset!!! I would be to if a neighbor's cat or dog did that to my chickens

Also the other problem is that once a dog or cat does that they never stop. I have 5 dogs and one (an appenzeller mountain dog) is supposed to be a hearder but she actually kills them and the moron doesnt even eat them. They are just a toys to her. Also until my chicks were big enough for the adult coop I kept them in a rabbit hutch in my yard. I cant anymore. She figured out how to unlatch it...! Anyway the best thing would be to A. Euthanize the dog, call animal control etc. B. Have them tie the dog up. C. Try to get them to build the dog a run or build a stinkin fence! T post arent that hard to set up!

Our remedy for any stray dog that is interested in our flock, its called a 12 gauge shotgun. There are no second chances.
