Neighbors dog issue..

its ok..in the a/ms the kids go to get the eggs..sometimes they leave the gate open...

but the other thing is that the chickens are on the outside of the fence; in their pen/coop and they are out in the a/ms and the eves to free range..but like i said
in an earlier post; they dont go further than like 4 ft outside of their run...

I had a neighbor like that, too, when we lived in town. People would drive up to the house, one person gets out, walks to the back door, then they leave two minutes later. All day, most of the night. I spent all day one Saturday writing down descriptions of people, vehicle descriptions and tag numbers. I took this info to the next Neighborhood Watch meeting and spoke to our local police officer about it. They did NOTHING. He read down the list, mumbling yep...yep... know him...watching him... yep... know him.... I asked him, "What do you mean 'know him'???" He told me that they knew the people on the list, mainly a list of users. They knew my neighbor, a "small time" dealer. They wanted the "Big Fish", so they did nothing about my neighbor.

My wife and I were pretty ticked off, to say the least. We (and other neighbors) started pressuring the landlord about him. I guess the LL got tired of the constant phone calls and decided to not renew the lease.

I agree with what others have posted about trapping the dog and taking it to AC. It has no collar or tags, so you should be able to easily turn it in as a stray. They'll have to pay a few fines to get him back.

I hope things get better for you.

I have a question, though. What does "SSS" mean?

I've seen it in several threads, usually talking about other people's problem dogs.

Do you have a local neihborhood watch? If not, are most of the law abiding neighbors friendly with each other? You could all band together against these people. Take notes, constant calls to the police/sherriff from multiple neighbors usually get theri attention. A "warning: no trespassing, property under video surveillence" sign may help keep unwanted vivtors from using your driveway. Another option is your local news station. They may be able to help you get action done about the drug dealing. As far as the dog, I'd step up from an air rifle to the SSS method as a last resort. I'd first bring the "stray" to a shelter. You may want to check into your local laws to see if you are legal to have chickens. If not, you can look at ways to change them.

Assuming they are renting, is there anyway to contact the landlord and tell him what's going on? Would he care? You could do a property search on the net and find out who owns the house...

I love this "SSS" idea!!! Hahahaha!! I want to do this to my neighbor's dog, too. He killed one of my chickens, on my property, and the owners have never apologized or even acknowledged it, to me, anyway...noone in the neighborhood likes the dog, but noone has the guts to actually do anything to him. I've tried to take him off to the pound, but I can't get my hands on him! He's too big, and too skittish. ( I think he knows I want him dead ).

Good luck with your awful predicament...I agree with everyone here that that dog has got to go, by whatever means necessary. Your drug dealing neighbors are obviously not going to do anything about it, so I guess it's up to you. Keep us posted.

Well, I guess I'm in the minority here - but if your chickens are outside your fence free ranging, I don't really think you can blame dogs or any other predator for taking a swipe at them. There may be a leash law where you live, so the owners of the dog should keep thier dogs contained, but you as a chicken owner should make sure they are protected. It sounds like you live in an area that isn't remote. In communities like yours, you can't leave your animals out of your fenced yard and expect that no one will steal them, car hit them, hurt them or that a neighbors dog might get loose.

X2

Sometimes making irresponsible people responsible is impossible and you have to protect your own. The old saying, "can't make a purse out of sow's ear" and in the meantime it is you that suffers and they couldn't care less and will go on not caring.

*That being said, please do not gloat or suggest torturous ways of killing for pleasure or indeed, post in such a way that your predator control can be construed as pleasure killing instead of simply taking care of a problem
