Neighbor's dog keeps nosing around...

Lemme guess, your neighbor tells you that Fido wouldn't harm your chickens. Mine said the same thing until I took pics of his dog jumping my 6-foot fence to get to the birds. Fortunately he installed a dog fence after that.

Yours too huh? My neighbor finally kept his labs home after I peppered their butts with birdshot from approx. 100yds. They felt it, but didn't hurt them. The neighbor was watching and decided I really was serious about his dogs staying off my property.
If theres a next time..............it won't be birdshot. I'll get to use the new scope I had put on my rifle Friday.

Mouse traps.... Pen your dogs up and put up some big rat traps or mouse traps....... Tell her that you are doing it to train her dog. that way she has a chance to keep him out... After a few goes in the yard with some live mouse traps he might be less inclined to come onto your property.... And he did it to himself.

Tried the very same thing. Did NOT work. Just had cats with sore feet who now know what a mouse trap is and to avoid them.
Quite literally filled the bed of DW's truck. Cats would get in the back and rip open garbage bags and make a heck of a mess. Wish we could have seen the action when they went off. Of roughly 40 traps, 2 were not tripped. Several were on the ground next to the truck with fur still in them. Had to give them a dirt nap to stop them.

Actually my neighbors are both law enforcement officers--she is a state cop--and pretty responsible once I proved to to them. They were just in that Egyptian river for a while is all.

First things first------------

I would move my chicken yard to another location. 2' is no buffer zone at all.

the dog could be on his own property and still be close enough to scare/harm your chickens.

Secondly

Before you go off calling animal control/ police/ sheriff make danged sure your chickens are legal. They may be allowed in your town but I bet the ordinance (if one exist) comes with some buffer zone requirements. They wiLl either spell out the distance from neighbor's home or property line.

Even if no ordinance exist---- I would still get them chickens well away from the property line.

As for protecting your flock. If it ain't your neighbor's dog it will be some one else's. You need to protect your flock from all threats. A good fence can be you and your chickens best friend.

Go buy this fencer for 40 bucks http://www.fishock.com/store/electric-fence-charger/ss-525cs and buy a bag of insulators is 10 a roll of 17 ga wire is another 15 and a 99 cent can of peanut butter youll spend 2 hrs max puttin a wire around the coop and if you want it in the yards step in posts are like 1.50 each. if it isnt the neighbors dog itll be a coon etc... Also you go shootin without the dog killin a bird and the next time a chicken accidently gets across the yard into the neighbors hell have stew... SO MANY ISSUES ARE SOLVED BY A FENCE!!!! It is a passive defense and very effective. My neighbors dog got into my pasture fence 3 years ago and avoids the area to this day he gets his tongue on that its all over hell leave.... I have to agree you kill the dog and your on his RADAR and unless you are surrounded by NO houses at all sure as heck youll be seen and the next thing you know your in a tit for tat and coops end up being burned down fence cut etc... You put a fence up and the neighbors dog goes squeeling home one maybe 2 times and the neighbor is like its your fault you dumb dog don stick your nose in the fence... Also when the neighbor says whats the fence for instead of mouthin off FOR YOUR DOG Id say well we have coons and coyotes etc... I like to have a few neighbors we get along with so if somethin is amiss at my place oh say its on fire theyll do somethin besides pulling out their lawn chairs and laughing all day long as my place burns up...

Catch the dog.. take off its collar and bring it to the pound as a stray...easy.

Do it EVERYTIME it comes back...
If it keeps happening.... bring it to a shelter FAR away...
