Neighbors dogs in coop. UPDATE! 2nd time. 911/charges/court today

Yes, I get the Alpha thing. My dog listens almost all the time. I am able to make her wait for her food, basic commands. And when I am present she listens. She bolted because my 6 year old is not the alpha. I was in the fam room. When I heard the commotion. But I am getting great advice on training her not to move on command. I hope it works.
As for the neighbor. I wish he would be more compliant like I was when the roles were reversed.

Report the letter to your post master. The neighbor can get in deep trouble.

I know how big a great dane is and I have been knocked off balance by one. If the dog barrelled over your 6yo there is not much he can do and I have yet to find someone who can run fast enought to catch a dog on foot.

Now take the dork to small claims. take both letters, if they are handwritten it won't be hard to prove he wrote both.

be honest with the judge admitting that your dog did get and how.

The bottom line is.... HIS dog killed your chickens... he needs to be responsible.
It has NOTHING to do with her dane...
My dogs get out once in a while...and if they ever killed a neighbors animal...then i'd be FULLY responsible...
AND.. If my neighbors dog ever got into MY yard and killed any of my animals..i would EXPECT them to pay my damages...
Accidents happen... and you HAVE to be responsible for them... the OP's neighbor isnt responsible for his dogs actions at all...Hence the problem and the law suit...

You know, accidents happen. Anyone's dog can get out once in a while even with the most vigilent owners. I think people need to try being a good neighbor to have good neighbors. A good neighbor would at least try to communicate with his neighbor for a resolution before jumping to conclusions. It is one thing if your neighbors dog gets out and does something and the neighbor makes up for it. It's another if they don't. But how can someone make amends if you don't give them a chance? I'm sure if the great dane's owner paid for any damages and it was a one time thing it is forgivable.

LOTS of people own dogs that like to bolt. I have one dog who wouldn't think of passing me in a doorway, and the other thinks any cracked open door or gate is an invitation (I didn't raise him....) BOTH my back and front doors are within the dog's fence.

I USED TO have my boxers bolt by me and also dig out from under the fence. Then I implimented Cesar Millan's pack leader methods. I tell them "stay" and they won't move another inch. I can leave the front door open all day. The alpha dog thing works. I always thought my boxers were just too hyper for it. It does work.

The only dog that ever got my chickens (didn't even scratch them, just pinned them down) was my dog Heidi. And now she sits and looks up at me for permission to do anything. She don't even look at a chicken the same anymore. I wouldn't allow it as a pack leader.

Now, all that said... the dude still needs to pay for your chickens. You should have filed a police report right away. That is what the county cops here told me to do if I ever had a issue with my neighbor (the dog hoarder) and her nasty inbred mutts. I know every place is different, but not usually by all that much... they said, you file a police report for property damage when it happens and they will make sure the owner reimburses you.

The problem is the people who say things in a very rude, acusatory manner don't think they are being rude at all. I always feel very uncomfortable when the sarcasm and caustic comments show up, even when they aren't aimed at me.

Exactly.

As for the Dane, even the 6 yr old should rank above the dog, not below. DOG is the bottom of the totem pole, not between the adults and the kids.....

Good luck with the neighbors, I would be the neighbor who would gladly pay for all damages and be grateful you did not shoot first.
