hmmm....just because they are pitbulls and killed a couple of chickens ...they are automatically "killer pitbulls"...Gimme a break....any dog will kill a chicken if they feel inclined to. They are dogs....chickens are dinner.....end of story.

My goodness Wolf woman , if fourstoomany is raising some chickens for food its not for dog food. its to provide food for her family.

I'm really sorry about your chickens, I know how you feel. Some people shouldn't own dogs if they cannot accept the responsibility. It is two little terrier like dogs killing our chickens, they come back every day, now whenever I leave the house, I have my cell phone, a camera, binoculars, a stick and a BB gun. If Animal Control doesn't take care of it tomorrow, the BB gun will be a real gun.

That's not what I meant, and I think SHE knew what I meant. She mentioned she'd never killed an animal and I wondered if that included chickens too.

And chicky_mama she had already gone over and said that she wasn't tagerting pitts, she was just stressed when she mentioned the breed AND she went back and changed the titles of her post.

I'm sorry for your losses

When we first moved out here in the country my dogs had escaped their kennel and killed several of my neighbors chickens. That same day, I paid for the chickens, sincerely apologized and needless to say my dogs have been kenneled unless they are with us.

My neighbor, (6 acres away)who is very awesome I might add, taught me a couple things that day.

1) Forgive once.

2) She told me about the three "S" rule. Shoot, Shovel, and Shut up.
Translation: Shoot the critter, bury it, and don't tell a soul! A credo that I now know works. ( luckily we have several acres...lots a places to dig

My family and she are great friends now, I still feel bad about they way we met her though...especially as a chicken person...

As I sit here, with the initial stun wearing off, I feel so sad. I still can not believe this happened. My daughter's silkie hen was such a sweetie. The campine was just beautiful. I guess I need to be more prepared. I do live in the country, with a lot of wild life. I just always thought, if anything happened it would be a wild creature attacking my chickens.

I still do not feel comfortable killing a dog. I was thinking maybe pepper spray? Yes that is actually a question... Would that work against a dog attack? I do not want to start getting all fearful, but I do walk my little dog daily, I do not want to be attacked. I guess I just never thought about the dogs in the neighborhood. I feel violated in a way, or maybe vulnerable is a better word...

Depends on the dog with the pepper spray, some it just enrages. Maybe carry a hefty cane with you, tho in the case of a serious attack, even that won't help. We can't be afraid of the what-ifs when walking our dogs or crossing the road or driving the car

We just need to know what's out there and be as prepared as we can!

Someone told me on here that pepper spray works well against dogs.

I would never in a million years thought I would even be able to humour the thought of killing a dog, but seeing two dogs come back every day for more of my chickens, I would be more than happy to make a head shot myself.

And I do understand what you mean by violated, it is a horrible feeling.

I hope you start to feel better soon about all this.

Sorry about your chickens. Be thankful your daughter is not at the ER, or worse. Even though you succumbed to pressure and deleted the word pitbull from your post, the fact is you are still dealing with pitbulls. And pitbulls have a bad reputation for a reason. If anything happens in the future, and you come back here to share it, you will hear one of two things. Either A.) crickets; or B.) the pitbull owners ALL telling you THEIR pitbull would have never harmed a fly. You need to get educated about the breed of dog you are dealing with.
