Neighbours left a thinly veiled threat to our chickens

What a bizarre situation. Salt? Are they Gypsy by chance? I have many roma friends and they have some distinct superstitions.
Salt as a purifier is common to most Western magical traditions, tracing its roots to the Ancient Middle East, likely related to salt's use as a preservative. Offensive, and ignorant, to single out any particular culture (particularly one as historically suppressed as the Roma) with claim of a "distinct" superstition involving salt as a purifier. A trip thru the aisles of your local Walmart/Target/etc likely will spot "Purifying" Himalayan Salt Lamps taking up part of a shelf. If Walmart carries it, claims of cultural distinctiveness are likely overblown.

It may also be used as a purifier in Eastern magical traditions - I don't know, having made few readings on the subject though I can quickly think of at least a few practices which suggest similar magical uses in those traditions as well.
