So I lost my 4 month old hen last week.

Necropsy showed roundworms, evidence of a previous infection with coccidia, and nephrotoxic infectious bronchitis.

I have dewormed with panacur per the vets instructions. We are going to wait a week then treat for coccidia just in case, then wait 10 days to re-deworm for rounds to make sure everything is gone.

I only have one other bird with any symptoms and the symptoms are few and far between. Occasionally my 5-6 month old Olive Egger sounds a bit gurgly. I worry that I either got dewormer down the wrong hole and she aspirated or that she has an upper respiratory infection. I am monitoring her closely, she is eating, drinking pecking around and has normal stools. I can't isolate her because she completely freaks out if she can't be around her friends.

My questions are :
1) How worried should I be about an upper respiratory infection and how would I treat? NONE of the rest of the flock (14) are showing any symptoms at all.
2) if she aspirated the panacur, will she recover?
3) I know they say it lives in the environment for 5 to 6 months. After that can I get more chickens? Or can I only have the chickens I have until they pass?
4)I was planning on hatching out chicks in the spring. Should I scrap this plan?

Thanks. Just wanted to see what y'all thought. I have a consult pending with the poultry vet.

I'm sorry for your loss, it's good that you were able to find out more.

The one that is gurgling - is her crop emptying overnight?

Infectious bronchitis is a virus, so there's no treatment for that. Some folks do treat with an antibiotic like Tylosin to help with any secondary infection. See if you vet feels that may be an appropriate course of treatment.

Treating for Coccidiosis with Amprolium can be given at the same time of de-worming if you think Coccidiosis is a problem. 2 different things there. Amprolium (Corid) is a Coccidiostat, Panacur (Fenbendazole) is an anthelmintic. As far as I know, there are no contraindications when using those at the same time.

Here's more info about diseases.
