Nest box designs

I absolutely love your coop. I desperately need a walk in coop. Lol. It would make life much easier. My husband and I are slowly making plans for a chicken castle 😂 so these will all be great ideas to help incorporate into the plans. We live in pa. So weather is so unpredictable. One day there can be snow and the next it can be 75 and sunny, especially in spring and fall. Summers can get super hot and humid. Winters have hit -15 "real feel" just a few weeks ago. 😭 So planning has been a challenge.

Thank you.

You'll need to build a lot of flexibility into your coop.

That’s here in NJ. This is my coop

Do your chickens go broody? You may want something that is easily blocked off.

Do you intend to let a hen raise chicks? That can impact how you want to design things too.
They have and I fully expect a few to this year. Especially my silkies. I would like to let them raise them if all works out. So I do want an area that can be blocked off as well. There is SO much that goes into planning. But, if your putting the work into it, might as well make sure you do it right lol. I love your coop 😊 and nj isn't far, we go there about every summer! Our weather is pretty similar. Though your humidity may be a bit higher. Gotta love the diversity that spring and fall brings 🥲.

Oops 😂 I think I was mistaken. I put your reply @Krugerrand with @CKfarm22 s reply. Sorry for the confusion lol

What has been your favorite nest box set up?
Do you prefer the typical, or have you gone non-conventional? Inside set up or outside set up? I'm looking for some inspiration for a different set up for my nest boxes. I like to re-purpose things and love seeing other people's cool ideas and set ups.

Also, if you have a mixed flock, do your bantams lay where your big girls lay? My oegb pixie isn't having it. I believe it's just too big for her to feel secure, so if you have run into this issue, what have you used for your smaller ladies?:D
Our nesting boxes extend off the coop so they can be accessed from the outside which I really like.

Thank you🫶🏻 we worked very hard on it and we plan on making another one for my parents house! The whole coop was designed by me!

What a great idea! I actually have a dresser that I have been trying to think of a way to do something else with. It's an old, solid wood, super long one. And very bulky. Too bulky for my room lol. Maybe 🤔
Do it! I can't tell you how therapeutic taking a sledge hammer to that monster was. And now I actually like and appreciate it :thumbsup

It's now become much more enticing 😂I will post photos here once I do it! It is one design that I am definitely interested in regardless if we do others as well or not. The ladies may appreciate some options.

Please do post pics. Not that I'm encouraging you to have no storage for yourself, but I was so hesitant for so long to get the amoire monster out of my house because I really didn't want to just send it to the fire pit or dump. This repurpose was the perfect solution. Also, the drawers would have been totally fine as nest boxes without the crates that I set in them. I just did that because the girls were used to the crates so I thought it would be an easier adjustment to the new setup and I had to store them somewhere anyway...... Good luck!!
