If you want to look for easy things that can be recycled to make nest boxes here are a couple I have used in the past.

so in addition to still wondering about my previous 12" width question, I am also wondering now...those of you that built the nest box extension out the sides of your coop, how did you support it? It has to be able to hold a decent amount of weight right?
