Nesting box question...

What kind of nesting boxes did you decide on ?

I used plastic crates mounted to the side wall of my coop (former storage shed).

Like plastic milk grates Like I use ?

I fill my nesting milk crates 1/2 way with pine shavings and never had an egg roll out of them NOR get broken ... I have 12 nesting boxes all lined up side by side on the floor of coop and remainder of coop is also covered with pine shavings ... and I have close to 100 head in my flock ... Roost is on total opposite side of the coop so NO POOP in nestings boxes ....

Liz, they're fine if they're right side up, but I have some that I put sideways and I have to screw a piece of wood or landscape edging across the opening or the eggs will just fall out or get dragged out.

Ok, you're by SC. I've lived in Dacula and Lilburn and grew up in Decatur. Now, I'm in the mtns in Fannin County, right at the NC line.

NO , I am in Lafayette , Louisiana :
YES , I could imagine that happening and becoming a problem , so , yes mine are all upright positions . We have nothing on top , and they are not mounted . Seems to be working really well , considering the amount of hens we have . Infact , DH went Thursday night to an auction in Crowley , La. and arrived back with 12 more milk crates to add more in the coop . With this many hens , we will need them .

Those milk crates are really versatile! I use them in both positions, upright and sideways, on the floor. My broody is on her eggs in a sideways milk crate right now. I meant Dash was near SC, sorry for the misunderstanding.
