Nesting Boxes sitting on North/South/East/West?

Sounds good! The run looks roomy, and it may not be a problem. We started with 17, and all got along great, except one breed. We sold those 3 girls and sent 3 unwanted males to freezer camp. You will need to make sure there is enough roost space, but if your coop is secure and predator proof, you can leave the pop door open for 24/7 access to the run.

That is a good option as well...I just need to make sure that they know to go into the coop when winter rolls around again...just yesterday, we got 8" of snow but it will be gone in a few days as Spring is coming and the temps over the next few days are going from the 40s to the 50s.

Thank you so much for your input and ideas! :)

It's really hard to tell from the pic, but once you get your coop the nest box may be just fine. It may be water tight or actually have something there to prevent it from leaking.

You may want to put a latch on the nest box lid. I can't tell if it has one, but it would help to keep coons and such from getting in through the nests. Coons are smart, sneaky little buggers.

Another think you can do in the winter is put up some clear tarps/shower curtains on a couple sides of your run. With the wind blocked, your girls will enjoy being out in the run.

Ahhhh! Another thing I forgot was the latch!!! Thank You!

The clear tarp is a great idea! I can pick up the clear painters plastic; it should be pretty thick/hardy and would give the girls the wind break you talked about.

Thank you again! :)

Don't think I've seen this coop/run before, maybe a new model?
As usual dimensions given are vague...coop looks pretty darn small,
maybe just under 4'x4' given the 10" nest size?

Does it look like top of run is just the canopy tarp...with no mesh under it?
Concerns about predator proofness(not really a word, I know),
and snow load capacity are glaring here.

Hi aart!

Yes, the overall dimensions were provided, but really only for the perimeter being 13.7 x 13.7 feet, ~188 sq. ft. Since the coop/run is already on its way (due to arrive first part of next week), I'm hoping the build instructions will state the coop dimensions specifically so I can determine if the size is appropriate - I hope so! But, I'm thinking your approximation might be true at being 4'x4' with three roosts inside. Now, I'm worried!!!!

Aart - if this is the case with the coop potentially only being 4'x'4, then what would be the amount of fully grown large hens that would be comfortable? Thinking I would lose 25% of the chicks I ordered (18 total), that would be ~15 after shipping death or later mishaps. Did I over order? If so, I still have time to reduce the order amount...Please give me your input!

There is just the tarp; we would need to place mesh on the canopy frame prior to affixing the tarp.

Someone did ask the question about snow load for the tarp and the answer was it passed roof snow loading test with 237 lbs.

Please let me know your thoughts...! Thank you so much :)

I just saw that this is a older post. I would have closed off where the coop was and set it inside totally under the covered area
Maybe close to the run door
It would protect the coop completely and make it cooler no matter where the sun was
