If you have access to the cat little tubes they work pretty good as well. I have 10 with my girls around 30 chickens (bantam). My standards are also able to lay in them and seem to prefer them over larger boxes I give them.

Are you planning on ever letting broodies hatch chicks with the flock? (you may end up doing it even if you aren't planning on it now). It's good to have extra nests for that. I think 6 is a good number - it's unlikely your hens will use all of them to lay, so that will leave extras for brooding.

I have 10 hens. 3 nest boxes. All 10 hens use 1 nest box, no matter what I try to get them in the other 2 boxes.

And there are times you get your two biggest birds trying to share same box... Like seriously, one of you barely fits lol
