Nesting boxes

I found this old post on nesting boxes, but the photos's are no longer available. Anyone have them? I'm getting ready to build my nest boxes and am looking for ideas. Most of the pictures only show 2 rows. Has anyone done 3 rows of 5 boxes each?

I'm wondering about nest box size. I used some plans I got from the Purina website. The nest boxes are roughly 12x12x12 inches. It sure doesn't look very big! Is this going to be sufficient?

Depends on the breeds of your chickens, really. But that's an adequate sized nest box for layers, especially if they don't mind sitting fairly close to the front of the box, to look out and around. So to speak..... Some folks make their nest boxes 15" deep, so the chickens sit further back inside them.

But of course, chickens will nest in just about anything: covered cat litter boxes, buckets on their sides, potted plants, mailboxes, milk crates, oh all sorts of things.

The size is, as far as I'm concerned, more for our human sense of what's right, what looks good, symmetry, etc.

Thanks for the info! Buff O's, RIR's, and Black Sex-Links. I've looked at lots of designs since your reply, and they all seem to be virtually the same size. My nest boxes have a hinged lid, so the height actually tapers from ~12" to ~15". I guess I'll find out!

I use covered kitty litter boxes and my girls love them and they are easy to clean!
