"Neutered" dog question

scbatz33 is correct.

As long as he was properly neutered, you are okay. I have heard of vets missing a crytorchid testicle and getting a female pregnant, but it is very rare. It usually happens at shelter or spay clinics where the procedures are done quickly.

Your neutered dog will probably always go for the female when she is in heat. Even intact females or spayed females will hump a in-season female, LOL.

It is normal for dogs to retain their scrotal "sac" after neutering, puppy or adult. In the operation, a small slit is made to remove the contents. There is less bleeding that way and faster healing, etc. Reputable vets look for TWO testicles at prior to neutering because a cryptorchid requires more serious surgery to remove the undescended testicle.

Like others said, continued humping is a dominance issue.

my females hump each other when they are in heat also, drives me nuts but that's what dogs do, i've seem neutered males tie with females in heat, yes dogs are great

my friend has show beagles. She also had a rescue *stud* hunting beagle, he was neutered. He got a successful tie when her female came into heat. I think the *experienced* dogs have an easy time of it, none of my neutered males ever got a successful tie, and boy did they try with my female show beagle......she actually seemed very disappointed in them

Neutered male dogs can sire a litter of puppies for up to a month after they are neutered. I wish it was required for vets to tell people this!

Mounting is also a dominance behavior and even females will sometimes do it. It's not just a sexual behavior.

If you have copies of articles published in peer-reviewed veterinary journals that show a significant incidence of castrated male dogs siring puppies, then I would love to see them!

Edited because loupgaroux seem to have a hard time spelling "then."

Don't know about dogs (this is my first neutered male) but years ago I had an old barn cat neutered. Picked him up at the vet, walked into the house with him in my arms. He wiggled out and jumped my daughter's female. Frantically called the vet, who laughed. "I got 'em both. No worries there." So I didn't worry....until the night daughter's cat gave birth to 6 kittens. Boy, was I mad!

So, yes, it CAN happen.

Well, not that I doubt that the timing is right, but please let me point out that cats are not dogs. Also, just because you only witnessed that mating doesn't mean that others could not have taken place prior to that event or even that another tom could not have mated with her. The problem with anecdotal evidence is that there are usually no controls, that there are way too many variables, and that the results can't be replicated. I'm not saying that anyone who says that they think a neutered male cat or dog sired a litter, because in my experience anything can possibly happen at least one time over the passage of time, but I think that I would need to see at least one valid and reliable article published in a peer-reviewed journal before I recommended that vets starting their clients of the occurrence.
