Nevadans?

She's the same as she has been. All I know is she's not egg bound and she has 2 tumors that I've found. I called the UNR extension but they said the animal part where we can come has been shut down due to lack of funding. She gave me the phone number for the Nevada State Department of Agriculture and I was able to talk to Dr. Forbes. He says anything can cause ascites and we would not know for sure unless I put her down and they do the necropsy to find out what's going on.

He says I could wait it out because the fluid can be absorbed by the body and she could come out of it and everything will be fine. He's thinking it's EYP and the lumps could just be cysts.

I'm going to wait it out for now while I research this completely. At least I know she's not egg bound.

Beautiful Wellie egg. I can't believe some breeders try to get rid of speckling. That's what makes it a Wellie egg.

Sheryl I'm so sorry about your hen. Maybe it's something fixable? Who knows, but I'm really sorry. I know you love her.

I agree. I love the speckles. I was reading on the Wellie thread and saw that about some trying to breed for no speckles.

Glad you were able to talk to someone. I hope she's able to recover.

I agree! The speckles are the super cool thing about wellie eggs! I love marans eggs that are speckled too. My last 2 wellies laid a smooth colored egg and I was very disappointed!

My daughter and I wen to the feed store today, they recommended feeding the new chicks chick scratch for 24 hours, then mix in the chick starter after that. They said that it would help with the pasting problem. Has anyone heard of this technique?
I haven not read this on any of the blogs, or forums. This guy at the feed store does this for his hatchery.

I also read on a forum that someone uses towels instead of paper towels in the brooder. We were thinking of laying a light layer of pine then paper towels on top of the pine shavings. Any thoughts?

Thanks Elizabeth. I'm going to leave her alone, let her be with her family and keep a good eye on her. Today she was running around acting normal again but her tummy was still swollen just not as much as the last 2 days were. Perhaps the water is getting absorbed into her body like he said?

Jann, I've never ever heard of such a thing at all. Usually pasty butt is caused from not having water at first. I used towels with my chicks because I didn't like the mess the shavings and paper towels make.

I've never heard of that, either. I had one chick with pasty butt and I just kept monitoring her and wiping it off and she turned out fine, although she's still smaller than her hatchmates.

towels or paper towels will work. you only need a those for 2-3 days, then just pine shavings is fine. the towels will get really gross. I read a neat idea the other day. You can put a layer of newspapers, old feed bag or something on the very bottom of the brooder, then put down shavings (then towel or paper towel). then when your shavings get stinky, you can just lift out the papers or feedbag and discard easily. It's on the very bottom so the chicks are not walking directly on it. I'm going to do that with my chicks this time for easier brooder cleaning.

I haven't heard of that either. I just pay special attention to their little butts for a couple fo weeks, and give their booties a warm bath if it looks like there's a problem.

Paper towels would work until they really start pecking at things. But after they recognize where their food is, it won't be a problem.

I used to live on toll rd but the more devloped part at the beginning my guess is as long as you aren't in a developed area you are a go.

Thank you guys. I'm wondering if I should go ahead and start her on the Pen G anyways? Dr. Forbes told me not to drain her because high bacteria could endup in her stomach area and she will become syptic if she isn't already.

She does not have a fever, she's bloated and puffed up and stands around a lot and it sounds like cooing but she doesn't actually coo.

I'll update if there are any changes good or bad if anything should happen.
