My daughter and I wen to the feed store today, they recommended feeding the new chicks chick scratch for 24 hours, then mix in the chick starter after that. They said that it would help with the pasting problem. Has anyone heard of this technique?
I haven not read this on any of the blogs, or forums. This guy at the feed store does this for his hatchery.
I also read on a forum that someone uses towels instead of paper towels in the brooder. We were thinking of laying a light layer of pine then paper towels on top of the pine shavings. Any thoughts?
Never heard of that either but if it does stop pasty butt I'd say it's worth a shot. I usually get 1 or 2 out of ten that get pasty butt and this last batch was no exception. Out of 20 chicks 3 got pasty butt. Easy to take care of if you catch it early but I'd give it a try to see if it works!

Genny recommended giving them a mash made from chick starter and warm water for the first week or two. Boy they love that and if you use plenty of water they get a lot more water in their diet too.
