Nevadans?

Wow you folks have been busy! Love the pics Lacey! You take the best photos! Looking forward to that video Sheryl but I understand your family time comes first. We enjoyed being able to see Harmony during our visit.

Daniel you have been sooo busy! You all never slow down over there do you? Your son looks sooo much like you!!! I thought your daughter looked like your spitting image but that pic really shows how much your son looks like you!

Ground is still frozen up here so I won't be putting in peas or corn yet. I don't blame you on the corn Elizabeth. Corn is one of those plants that likes to grow in big groupings and most backyards are just not big enough for it. It's probably silly to grow so much when it's just Steve and I but I figure I have 30 days a year to sell extras at a stand out front. I love all this gardening talk. I wish we didn't have such a short season here. And moving to Red Rock shortened our season even more by a few weeks! Hope Steve's back holds up! I need him to handle the heavy stuff. He loves to help though so that's good!

Hey Ron how's that back doing? Mine is giving me heck lately! Hoping it's just the weather and not time to go back in to treat the other weak areas. Not that I'm hoping other folks hurt but if they do it may just be weather related then I know it will ease up soon.

My husband planted peas when he planted the lettuce a couple of months ago. We didn't set the sprinkler system on because we kept thinking it would rain. Once we set the timer, everything went crazy. I can't believe how many peas he planted! Not sure what I'll do with them. Haven't been out to see them since I had my back surgeries last week but I'm hoping they'll start blooming soon. Probably not this week, we had snow yesterday. I too love the garden talk. Next to my chickens, my veggie garden brings me so much enjoyment. Does anyone put up veggies? I do tomatoes and have a killer Dill Pickle recipe. I'd like to try green beans with the same recipe. My mouth is watering just thinking about them.

Sunny, sorry to hear about your back flaring up. I know the weather played hugely on good or bad days. It was mostly before the storm, like when the baharmetric temperature would change. Having just gone through surgery, I hate to think of you having to do it again but I think things have advanced so much since your first surgery that you could benefit. I know you'll know when it's time.

I have loved seeing all the new hatches and feel so happy to have this forum to entertain me in the next months of recuperation from my surgeries.
Sunny, can't wait for our hatch to start pipping!

Perfect timing for me!

I need the distraction.

It's been paining me. I tried to get some work done on my garden but the weather was just too nasty. I'm hoping it's better this weekend 'cause I really need to get going on it - the clock is ticking! I did manage to get on my tractor for a little bit, but only to let my nephew's 4-year-old drive it.

LOL, I bet he had a great time! BTW I like the new avatar pic. We can actually see you in this pic.

I sure hope your back feels better soon! I'm feeling for you all right now!!!

YEA!!! Pam's back!!! How are you feeling? I bet your pretty sore still (to put it mildly)! I keep peeking into the bator thinking I might see a pip even though it's 2 days away. It's not good when they pip early so I need to quit putting that energy out there. haha

I know I need to get at least one other spot looked at soon. The disc is bulging so much I feel like I am leaning against a rock when I sit back. These last 2 weeks have been pretty rough. Still think waiting as long as possible is a safe bet though.

We put up whatever we can, but my family eats so many vegetables that it's often a race to get anything saved. This year, we really focused on food storage while buying seeds, and we plan to get a used freezer on Craiglist when stuff starts producing. Even if it means picking beans, blanching and freezing a quart bag, and putting the rest in a stir fry. We also like to buy up boxes of stuff like corn or peaches when it's on some kind of crazy sale, and have a family preserving party. It's actually really fun.

Last year, I planned for food storage as well, but we had someone come over our back fence. Between them stomping through and the dogs running them off, then the obese dog getting locked in the garden when the gate swung shut, everything that we planned for food storage got shredded. Peas, carrots, onions, corn. We replanted with beans, since it happened in late June, but didn't get to put up any food.

Actually, a "she". That's her in the pic with me - you can tell by the ear-to-ear grin how much fun she had driving the tractor!
BTW the guy that set my eggs in his 'bator called last night. He had just candled, and 32 out of 41 eggs had veins in them!

So Poppy and Poppy Jr. will be parents soon. There should be some interesting mixes - he said about half the eggs are the blue to bluish-green and half are brown. So there'll be some EE crosses and maybe one or two Black Ams, and the rest are anyone's guess.

I have pickled beets in the past but I plan to try and do more this time around. I've scraped about a 40' x 60' area and just got my seeds last week. I'm already planning another order though - it's as bad as chicken math!

All the things I forgot first order when I was trying to be good and keep the cost down.

I'll post a list of what I got when I get home - maybe someone will want to do some trading...

I always wanted to learn to can but now there's no way. My back just won't support me for that long. I am hoping to get a few things stocked in the freezer though. One of the varieties of corn I bought, that Ron recommended, says it is fantastic frozen as well. The green beans I got from Sheryl will freeze well as will the pumpkin purree from Sheryl and Missy's sugar pumpkins. Not sure what else will. I may cook down some tomatoes if Steve wants to help and freeze the sauce as well. That would be about it though.

My Mom used to make these fantastic dill pickles from the cukes in our garden. Boy do I miss those! Her back was thrashed too so she hadn't canned since I was a kid.

Thanks for all the gardening advice! We are finally going to have some time to plant things in our new yard! Hurray!

I'm sorry to hear about your back, Sunny. My bf had a bulging disk and he couldn't do hardly anything whenever it got inflamed. The miracle-working physical therapist I worked for fixed him without surgery, but he still has to be very careful to not over exert himself. That really is a rough thing to go through! And Congrats on your new 'bator, that thing looks like the Cadillac of incubators!

I'm so excited about your duckies, Sheryl! Can't wait to see them when you get time. I hope you're enjoying the family time, too!

I wish I had a tractor driving uncle like you, Ron, when I was little! Sounds like a blasty!

Thanks Stevie! I appreciate the sympathy.

I am loving all the gardening talk too! I feel so lucky to have so many gardening folks on this thread! I know the non-gardeners are probably bored out of their skulls right now though. Just skip on by the gardening stuff if you are not into gardening! I try to separate my thoughts in different paragraphs so hopefully it's easier for folks.

IDK why I am rambling! I usually only do that in person cause I'm nervous! LOL!!!

I was thinking the same thing about wishing I'd had an Uncle like Ron! When my son was eight his Uncle would take him out on the tractor or the old farm truck and let him drive. He's 21 and still talks about it! hahaha
