Nevadans?

Bloomie, I struggle with humidity even in an incubator. I always have to watch for chicks getting stuck while hatching. I was just thinking about your stuck chick and had the thought of adding a pan of water to the nest box or wherever you can near by. It will help bump up the humidity at least a little bit.
Hen really should not be pooping on their eggs. But some are better moms than others. It will cause a real bacteria concern but only as long as it is wet. once it dries you might want to just leave them alone. If you do think it needs to be cleaned off just be careful you do not scrub at it. you don't want to puch contaminates into the egg shell.

The issue for me an my Serama eggs is pretty much decided for me. They cannot withstand that much handling. I have had embryos fail from being removed from the incubator for even a minute or two. I lost 6 that had developed to day 18 or 19 just from moving them to a different incubator to hatch. basically they are just way to fragile to do much of anything but turn and watch.

6 o'clock this evening starts lock down on 6 more eggs. all look like they are developing as of yesterday. I did a quick flashlight on the top of the egg type candling. Heilo is setting on 3 other eggs that are 5 days behind these. One way or another I expect her to get some chicks to raise.

A question about a Hen and her chicks. should she have her own pen to raise them in away from all the other chickens?

Penturner I do like to keep my brooies with chicks in their own area - still in the coop yard/run but sectioned off so the chicks do not have to worry about the adults. Some hens and roosters are fantastic with the babies - but others just look at them like they are moving snacks. Had a 6 day old chick worm its way thru the chicken wire yesterday into the bachelor pad - needless to say, that chick did not make it.

Hello Everybody,

An update on my status: Construction has begun on the coop, and I'll provide pictures as progress is more substantial. The plan is to be substantially complete on Saturday. From that point, the hen procurement phase will commence. I plan to attend the swap mentioned in an earlier post on this thread.
Hmbrd, We'll likely be interested in your EE's as those, Plymouth Rock's, and Welsummers stand out as the breeds we're most interested in.
Again, I think we're looking at starting with 4-5 hens, so any other assistance will be appreciated.

Take care,
Jason

Horsefeatherz, Thanks. The pen she is in is large so giving her own space will be easy. The Roo has been going nuts waiting for her to get off the nest so he will not be happy about it. I two lonely roosters now and they are both telling me all about it.

If all is going well the eggs should hatch in about 5 or 6 days. If not we have 6 eggs in the incubator that are all looking good that tomorrow will be day 19. I was thinking of trying to sneak eggs under the hen as they pip and sneak out the unhatched ones but not sure I will do it. I'm just hoping it all comes together close enough for her to have at least some chicks to care for.

Jason, look forward to seeing your pictures. I am also building an addition to the runs I already have. I will end up with 5 separate pens with real small coops in each one.

Chicken stuff will go on hold for the next couple of weeks though. We are prepairing the back yard for my daughters 18th birthday party.

Hope everyone is well

Aubrey, Keep promoting, it is working. I just talked to my wife and she said my daughters party will not start until 5 P.M. I asked her if we could take a break for a couple hours from getting ready for the party to run out and visit the swap. She agreed and has written it on the calendar. Hope to run into some of you all even if we will not be able to stay around for a long time.
