Nevadans?

Ron, that's a great setup and it's pretty too! Do you have any problems with wild birds, or your birds, getting stuck between the different fencing. I too, have the different fence sizes around my run and I've had two of my chickens get stuck between the two fencing and one wild bird died. I've tried to get them as tight as possible but of course they find the one spot....

Happy Birthday Elizabeth!! Sorry to hear about your sour stomach.

Mandy, my MIL grew up in VC. Her father was a civil engineer. In harder times people paid him by giving him chickens and such when he surveryed their property. Her mother passed away a few years ago, they are both buried in the VC cemetary. My MIL didn't know what to do with the house. There was 3 people trying to buy it from her, the County Commissioner was one of them. Her parents bought 3 parcels and only developed 1 parcel for their house and office because her mother didn't like to have neighbors too close by. The Commissioner wanted to tear down her house and office so he could build apartments there. Thank goodness it didn't happen. I think it would have ruined the historic house. John and I four wheeled out there in that valley you live in. I always dreamed of living there everytime we drove by it. My MIL rents out the house now.

I was planing on being at the swap around 10am since it fits in good with my schedule of stuff I have going on.

Julie, do you know if Heather is going to be there with her WH's?

Pam, it would be nice to meet you someday when it's better for you. I'm hoping for a get together again this year like we did last year.

Ron, congratulations on your bees finally. Love to see pics when you can.

Oh and I forgot to say yesterday my former boss is now working at the RGJ so perhaps we can contact her to see who we can speak to about the farmer's market. Especially since the RGJ keeps doing the farming series here in Nevada.

Thank you! I'll have to find a picture of it as it is now with the larger run and coop. I've never had anyone get stuck in it but wild birds did fnd a way in when I first put it up. On one corner the earth grade was lower so the upper layer of chicken wire didn't overlap the lower layer of hardware cloth. I had to "stitch" in some more chicken wire.

OK here's one of the larger coop under construction. I guess I'll have to take some new ones of how it looks now!

Thanks, I'll be sure to post some!

The only wild birds we get in our yard are mourning doves, drinking from the pond. But then, I have sparkly stuff flying all around the garden to keep them away. And Tater knows they're not supposed to be here, so she shoos them off, as well.

Missy, has the sparkly stuff worked then? We have mourning doves and the dreaded pigeons too that eat the snack food we toss to the birds. I heard the sparkly stuff will detract them and I also heard it works on hawks but that I have no clue to.

Sunny, what an amazing story! Are you going to try to keep her, after such a survival effort?

Yep, she came from a very dark egg so I will keep her for sure.

Congrats on the hatch and the goslings Julie!

Cool! I guess now we wait to find out if it works for Mandy and what days and times she wants to do this.

OK I'll wait to hear about the turkeys.

Thank you for the birthday wishes! A friend offered to babysit the kids last night so we could go out for an early birthday celebration. we ate Thai food--I had yummy pumpkin curry. Then we went to see the Hunger Games--I have read the books and it's a very intriguing series. anyway, I got sick to my stomach during the movie and had to leave. It was disappointing to miss the rest of the movie but really nothing I could do about it. I went straight to bed and feel okay today.

That she is!

Good job Sunny!!!! So glad to hear she's doing well too! I had to help a chick and wished I had intervened earlier because it was the way she was positioned in the egg. She never could have come out on her own. These are good stories for those of us hatching, to store for future incubation's where we may need to intervene. I think the hardest part it to figure out when to make the leap!

That is the hardest part! I try not to intervene much but I am not good at keeping my mitts off! haha Since I caused this problem in the first place though I had to try. Of course I intervene on a regular basis so that excuse doesn't fly either. Yes I've had to cull a couple that I "saved" cause there was a reason they couldn't hatch (well there's always a reason but you know what I mean). But there are a dozen babies that have made it because I intervened and they grew up happy and healthy! So I will probably keep helping out when I feel like a little fighter just needs a little help.

Gorgeous coop! IDK what happened to our coop when it was put back together but DH must have forgotten how it came apart cause it does not look the same! lol Oh well at least it's safe for the birds. That's all I care about. Yes we need more updated pics! *says the lady that just remembered she owes you all some chick pics*

Ron what do you do to keep predators from burrowing under the fence? I lock them up tight at night but I worry about during the day. Genny suggested instead of burying fencing that I lay fencing about 2 feet out (attached at the bottom to the existing fence) to keep coyotes from digging under. I thought that some heavy rocks on top of this would help to be sure they don't get under it.

We thought for sure we would get wild birds in our run and it never happened. The openings are now closed but the door remains open during the day.

I haven't had the wild birds get in yet either but the magpies drive the dogs nuts stealing their dog food.

Our chickens steal our dogs food! And they don't take no for an answer! I put food in the dog bowl and there's at least 10 chickens standing behind me trying to get to the food. They stick their beaks in there right next to the dogs nose! My Cocker Spaniel growls at them and chases them off but they come right back. My dad fed for me the other morning and the dogs weren't outside yet. By the time they got up to the barn the chickens ate both dog bowls of food!

Sheryl, I would love to come meet everyone. Maybe I'll be able to make the next get together.

Elizabeth, sorry for the yucky end to your birthday. Glad you feel better today and sounds like you had a good birthday up until....you didn't.
