Nevadans?

OK the book says that an antibiotic is usually given when chickens are sneezing/have a runny nose. Apparently this is the most common complaint for backyard chickens and is not quite as serious as I feared. They said that only in extreme cases will a chicken die from a respiratory infection and that the antibiotic given is very effective in treating this. The medicine they mention is Baytril. Since it is an antibiotic you may need to get it from your Vet. Except in severe cases the medication is put into the chicken's water and no shot is needed.

The chicken that is not sneezing but lethargic may still be suffering from the same thing. With no other symptoms it is hard to tell for sure.

I have Baytril!!!

The vet gave it to me when Rotisserie got renamed Gourmet. The expiration on the bottle is 2014. I wonder how much to put in the water... I only have about 1/2 ounce, and the vet had me putting a few drops in Gourmet's beak with a dropper.

I also have Sulmet in the water of everyone living in the house. Do you think I should treat the hens' water, as well, just to be sure?

The new babies will be going in my room! They won't make any dust... for a week, maybe. Lol. The ducks won't be susceptible.

Ok, everyone in the affected brooder got a few drops of Baytril. I only have a tiny bit, so I just gave them a little, and didn't dose the other brooder. If they start showing symptoms, I'll call the vet for more.

The new chick is separated, sleeping on a towel by a baseboard heater. I left the door to the room open. When we came back in, Oh'no was beside the chick, cuddling her.

Awwwww! How sweet!!! I would not worry about treating the hens with the Sulmet. If they have adjusted to their environment already they should be just fine. They can and do develop immunity with exposure to low doses of cocci when they get sick and recover. Beside it doesn't sound like this is the problem. Sounds like a mild respiratory infection.

Oh well, time to sleep. Everyone has their heaters and Sulmet. I'm going to cancel yoga tomorrow on account of sick animals and garden stress. Tomorrow is so busy that I know I wouldn't relax in yoga, I'd just pay attention to my worries.

Thank you so much for your help and support! I love this site!

That is awesome news about the city letting you just transfer the permits over! Have we figured out how much it would cost? That was the problem before. There just wasn't enough profit potential to offset the fees of running a booth.

Which costs are you reffering to Sunny? If the permits are already covered, and the market is here at my home? Most people will have to bring their own tables and things of course. I know you can get those folding sun shades pretty cheaply from costco or walmart. I've seen them on craigslist for free, but we do have quite a few small buildings people are welcome to use. We have guest bathrooms outside, as well as the kitchen for water and such. The guest house is right in that main area as well and I was thinking I'd get some small tables where people could sit and have their tea and cookies in there out of the sun.

I can see the duck, the blue cochins, the blue silkies, and the RIR. And I think the yellow with the black on its back is the hamburg, and the lighter yellow one is the leghorn. I'm guessing the light gray ones are the jaerhorns, or the red ones with white spots on their heads, since you ordered so many of those? And the turken shouldn't be difficult to tell apart. Did you end up getting a dark brahma as well?

. So glad I did, they are adorable. the black minorca may not be in the photo but it's here and easy to pick out as is the naked neck. We got 3 speckled sussex so I'll be able to get the 2 I wanted and you get yours. Glad I asked even though it said sold out on the site. they are chipmunk looking.

So Laila's favorites are the duckling and the naked neck, which are not even ours.

She thinks we should get ducklings. She thought we could just get a bucket of water for them to swim in.

Ok, maybe I'll take some more photos. It is not as comfy hanging out with chicks in the garage as it was when I brooded in my office but at least the dust won't be in the house.
