Before I forget I need to let you all know that the vaccine arrived today. It is an injectable so you need to have syringes (with caps) to take your doses with you. I'm pretty sure you can get them from the larger feed stores or the pharmacy since they sell them to diabetics for insulin. I have enough for my flock left over from my Mom, who was diabetic, but I don't have extras.

The stuff is supposed to be used up once opened and any extra should be tossed. So it looks like storing the vaccine for future use may not work. I am a little burnt out on research right now so if someone would find out if we can store it in clean syringes, in the fridge, that would answer that question. It should not be exposed to any more light than is absolutely necessary but a brown paper bag will take care of that problem. In addition to the syringes and paper bags you will need to bring a cooler and ice packs with you to pick up the vaccine. We will need to coordinate pickup so that everyone gets fresh vaccine.

I suspect that storing in the fridge, protected from light will protect the vaccine but we may need to take further precautions and seal the syringue tips with rubber or some other substance to protect it from exposure to air. I will read all of the literature that came with it tomorrow and give more info then. I'm too pooped tonight. Anyway there is no rush to pick it up we just need to do it at the same time or at least the same day. We still have 200 doses unspoken for out of the first bottle. The stuff came in 2 bottles so the second bottle will stay stored in my fridge for now till all the chicks I am brooding and hatching come of age (3 weeks).

Hmmm, looks like I may need to re-order vaccine for when my new babies are old enough. If it's opened now, it for sure won't last 2 more weeks. I can give it to the hens and little kids right now, though. Sunny, did the instructions say something about giving each bird several injections over a certain amount of time? I read about coryza on a website about respiratory illnesses, and it mentioned that the vaccine is given in 4 injections over the course of a year. If that's true, we'll need to order more anyway.

Good news! The little kids passed another night of health checks! They've been on Sulmet water for two days, so tomorrow I'll stop medicating and give them vitamin/electrolyte water. They'll stay quarantined for a few more days, and if they're still doing this well after Sunday, I think it'll be ok to put them back out in the mini-coop during the day. Of course, we'll still be doing the obsessive disinfecting for at least 3 more weeks, just to be sure.

This is a preliminary happy dance, since we're not over this yet. But I see the light! Each time I looked at that gorgeous blue wheaten and thought about culling him, I got choked up.

And tonight, I was telling my husband about several friends and their desires to breed project birds. Russ looked at me apprehensively and said, "You're not thinking of breeding, are you?" I said, "No, that would mean roosters. My biggest goals are a colorful flock and a colorful egg basket." Speaking of color... has anyone ever tried isbars? I googled them, and I love the egg color. An olive egger would make an prettier egg, but I really like the mossy color. If anyone wants to try hatching them, I'll go in with you on the eggs.

Are you gonna stop by the show Sunny?
What kind of vaccine is this and animal is it for?

I hadn't planned on going, sorry. My back is pretty messed up these days so doing things like this are out of the question. Dangit! I feel like such a party pooper!

The vaccine is for chickens and it is for Coryza.

Oh and Aubrey hasn't been on much. She is having a very hard time getting her iphone to cooperate with the new platform. It is pretty hard for me to keep up these days too. My computer is pretty slow and I get awfully frustrated at times. I may have to start limiting my time here. Once my back gets better I will need to get some work done around here and as slow as BYC is for me, with my system, I won't have as much time to devote to BYC as I have been.

I hope it works out for you. I thought they were being kept inside until after you had administered the vaccine and it had a chance to work. And I haven't read all the instructions yet but I will get to that tomorrow. I am OK with getting more in the future if we cannot store it (although I suspect there is a safe way to store it for a few weeks). It will be an ongoing thing since my flock will be getting new chicks on a regular basis.
