Elizabeth, you can get oxine at sears. They keep it in the pets department. I found out while I was searching for here locally.

Love the pics Elizabeth and Aubrey. I have pics but I need to get them off the camera and put them on my computer.

Welcome back Ron! I hope you're doing well?
thanks for the tip, sheryl. I didn't even know sears had a pet department. Get those pics posted!

yes, Ron, hope you are feeling better after your surgery.

what is this stuff you guys are talking about?

Ok so please give me bantum and standard chicken stats and a mixed stat if you can on these 2 coops. which holds more?
5x5 coop with a 5x5 run?
4x5 coop with a 6x5 run?
I think they are alll about 6 feet tall on one side and slant to 5 feet tall on the other(coop and run)

MY guess is pullet

Pam did you move your broodies yet? Oh no you need to wait until your Hubby gets home don't you? I so need to figure out a better way to do it before I get another broody. The last time was a disaster.

BTW how are you feeling?
No, haven't moved them yet. I'm trying to be good and wait for my husband to get home but I'm also considering putting up wire so the chicks won't fall off the ledge where the nests are and then moving them after hatching. These girls are pretty nasty about protecting the eggs so the other chickens steer pretty clear from them so the only issue I have with leaving them where they are is that they're about 2 feet off the ground. Any thoughts on this from anyone?

My back is doing well. The leg pain I had after an active week a couple of weeks ago went away with rest. I'm only 7 weeks post op and I'm doing my part not to mess up my surgeons handy work. I'm able to run my businesses from my home office, I just wish I could save some payroll by working the floor some but the doc said no way. We had a parade in town last Saturday and we're on the route. I went to enjoy the parade with all the family and ended up behind the bar for about 3 hours! We were way understaffed so I had to help! My legs were like jello and my back was tight but I had a blast....being a bartender in a wine and brew bar is lots of fun. We have a great clientele. I've taken it easy ever since...(well, except moving some hay bales preparing to move the broodies) but I didn't hurt too much afterward! Thanks for asking.

Sears HUH? I wish I had one close. Going to the Bay on friday, maybe I'll hit Newpark Mall and see if they have it there. Did you notice the price?

I checked after Sheryl posted that and they have it on sale for $45 right now. Here's the link...

Thanks for the tip Sheryl!

I agree. Very weird! I've had an unhatched egg roll into a hatched egg before but never what you are describing. I almost tossed the egg I had like that, thought it had already hatched, but when I grabbed it I realized it was way too heavy for an empty shell. Popped off the outer shell and there was a chick pipping inside! Popped her back in and she hatched in an hour.

If you are letting them out everyday, all day, I would go with the bigger run but, for me, it would really depend on the set up each coop has. Do you have a link to the floor plan for each? Oh as far as how much room is need per bird for LF and Bantam there is info on the learning pages of BYC or just do a search. This subject is covered at length here.

You moved hay bales?!!!!! Hoo boy. Glad you didn't hurt yourself! Jeez I started to say you are as bad as me but I'm not moving hay bales! lol

Haven't had but the one experience with broodies so I will hang out and hope someone else has some valuable advice on that issue.

$45???????????

I paid $28, got free shipping and free citric acid. Even shipped it's cheaper elsewhere. That's a horrible price. Just sayin.

Kim, do you have a link to the website you purchased from?

Sunny, I moved them, didn't lift them. My thighs were sore from pushing them!

Ron, can you talk or is your throat too sore. That's quite a surgery for an adult I hear.

I tried to get the site up, but I didn't have the name right and it froze up my laptop for a while. Couldn't even manually shut it down.

OK here's some links for you.

You can also buy it on eBay, but just watch that you don't spend a fortune on shipping. I bought from Revival when they had a special free shipping event. They have them a couple times of year.

Here's some links with some info too.

Walmart sells a Cool-Mist humidifier for $29. You can put the birds in a crate and cover it while treating them. Each bird was treated for 3 days for 1 hour each day by someone here on BYC and it cured PERCOLATOR LUNG???
Mix 1/8 teaspoon per gallon of water. Mist to spray over the heads 3 times a day for 10 days if you're dealing with a respiratory/fungal disease.

Thanks Sheryl! Yes, I am slowly getting better. It's not fun!

Cute, cute, cute kids, human and chickens (and you too Elizabeth)! And I agree the light brahma is a pullet. They look rooish when they're young but she would have a much more pronounced comb by now.

Had a funny thing happen today. When I went to check on the broodies, one of them had moved an egg out from under her. I saw cracks all over it so I took it. I was surprised to find it was pretty heavy so I sat it down to carry down to the trash and to decide if I had the guts to eggtopsy it. I took it in the barn where it was dark to see if I could candle it (it's about day 7). I don't have much experience but it wasn't clear. I decided to give all the chickens some scratch and fresh water to see if I could get the broodies to get off the eggs so I could count eggs (about 30 between the two). It worked and they both ran out like crazy girls and got some fresh water and treats. Back to the egg....I decided to just peel back a little part of the egg at the crack and to my surprise it popped off...only there was shell still there! I peeled another piece and same thing! Turns out this egg got moved into the shell of a broken egg...same color, same size! I don't know if the chicken thought it was broken so she moved it out from under her or what but I picked off most of the stray shell and put it next to the girl that had the least amount of eggs. Checked back when I went to lock the coops and she took it back. It'll be interesting to see if it stays put or she moves it out again.
I have this happen frequently - where I get an egg that looks cracked but it turns out there is like a second shell over it. I haven't been able to come up with an explanation but the idea that a chicken would try and place another egg inside it seems a little far fetched. I think I might post a question over in the Egg Laying forum...

Sears HUH? I wish I had one close. Going to the Bay on friday, maybe I'll hit Newpark Mall and see if they have it there. Did you notice the price?
Well I was going to post that Sears looked about double the price you could find it for elsewhere but looks like you all were already all over it! I wonder if C.A.L. has it?

love the photos of your kids, too.

Thanks Elizabeth I'm getting there. This is the first day I really feel better.

Thank you all! I hope you guys are right and Happy is a pullet, seems strange that the same age chicks mature on a different time table, non of the others have any red. Happy is much more assertive than the others, maybe she is the alpha hen! If Happy turns out to be a roo I think he would then be look for a new home if he continues with the aggressiveness.
Otherwise we are having fun with them, especially since they are outside in the half done coop! LOL!!!! Hopefully getting windows installed soon, thankfully a friend gave us two!
Wish I would have had chickens years ago!
Have a great day, enjoy the weather!
