Happy birthday Sunny! Those pics look great.
knemeyer, Congrats on the babies. Theyre so fun to have!!
Bantamamba, dont diss the lemmon valley feed store. Theyre actually really great. Two of the employees suck, but theyre new and are probably fired by now. I saw that little store start from scratch. The old owner and his then-todler son bought wood from us one year. Theyre all awesome people and the prices are better than what we've found all through reno.

Hello from Southern Nevada! I see there are a few others in my area. I am new here. Some friends of ours in town just picked up some chicks. The idea of having our own eggs is intriguing, so here I am to learn as much as possible! From what I've determined, it is legal to keep chickens in Boulder City. We have a large protected yard with grass and a garden, so we are considering allowing the chickens to roam during the day. We are in the infancy stages, so I would appreciate any advise you could provide! I don't even know where to buy chicks, feed,...

Thanks for the welcome!! I lurk quite a bit and learning lots. I spoke with one of my daughter's friend's dad (who has chickens) to get some pointers. I can't wait to get started! It's great to have resources that are in the same area! I hope to make it to the chicken swap this weekend in Washoe Valley - anyone else going?

It is probably because China is re-valuing their currency. The immediate effect is that the price of goods in China is going up and also their wages are going up. The bottom-line is everything Chinese (think of all the electronic parts, y'all) is going to go up in price, thereby raising the price of consumer goods.

Hi BoulderCityFoul, I'm in the Northwest Las Vegas area and just got my chicks today. From what I heard, you may not want them going into your garden too much. They can really tear it up. I'm remodeling a shed into a coop with a run large run. My neighbor lets his free range because of his horses and he wants the chickens to eat the fly larvae. But, he has to search high and low for his eggs. I guess it just depends on what your priorities are. I would say talk to anyone in your area who has chickens and they will give you best advice for your area. I just picked up feed and supplies from my local feed store, but ordered my chicks because I wanted varieties they didn't carry. I did pick up Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens. It was pretty helpful. But going on this site and getting advice from all these very experienced people is the best move. Good luck!

Congrats Knemeyer on the new babies all arriving healthy! They are adorable! Especially that Polish baby!

Congrats Penturner on a healthy hatch! Let us know if that final egg hatches.

If not, it still sounds like a much better way to go than incubating them.

Hope all the Dads had a great Father's day last weekend!

's NV thread! It's always great to learn of more chicken people in our neck of the desert!

Knemeyer - Congrats on the new babies! I use sand purchased from Home Depot from the get-go in my brooders. No problems being wobbly/clumsy or splayed-legged and I find I have no problems with pastybutt cause they have 'grit' available first thing. I put down a liner first, then the sand, so it's very easy to clean. I'm always amazed at how quickly they start trying to dust bathe in it too. Just my 2 cents... I totally agree on the keeping them seperate from the garden, unless you're done with it for the season. They will scratch it down to nothing in no time flat. Have you guys heard of Permaculture? Someday want to work out a system that allows them a run into a specific portion of the garden that would rotate yearly. That way they can fertilize the area, eat the plants, rest the soil, have more room to run and make the best use of space.

SunnyDawn - Happy Birthday! Hope your day is wonderful. I loved your pictures from your trip. I have some beautiful ones of Zion and Bryce Canyon I should find and post. Oh, and your chicks are growing up so beautifully!

After about two weeks of pouring over ebay, craigslist, and freecycle for a dog crate to seperate my cockerals from the roo I'm borrowing, I found a crate and a tall exercise pen around the corner at a yard sale for $40 total! Yay!

I have been studying the idea of permaculture for a long time now (before I knew it was called permaculture). I love the idea. It combines all the things that are important to me. Using animals to fertilize and clean up pests as well as the use of beneficial insects to deal with unwanted pests, crop rotation, beneficial plant combinations and crops to plant in "resting plots" etc, etc.
When I taught science I made this a small part of the curriculum. We planted a small garden and let ladybugs loose and hatched preying mantises as well. They also studied the use of worm castings and other natural fertilizers instead of chemical fertilizers and they got extra credit for building a "garden friendly animal house" of some kind (for bats or toads etc). We also hatched chickens and butterflies in class. Although at that time I couldn't keep the chicks so we donated them to a farm. The kids loved this "hands on" stuff!

Yes, please post your pics from Zion and Bryce canyons. We didn't get to either one this trip.
