Nevadans?

Welcome BoulderCityFoul, And anyone else that I have missed. This place is really hopping the last few days. It is always nice to have new people chime in.

The third egg hatched! That gives Heilo 100% fertility and 100% hatch rate. Huge difference over incubating. She is now in a 2 foot by 4 foot cage of her own and once the new babies start exploring we are going to try and add her other three chicks that hatched last Thursday. IT is pretty much impossible to get pictures right now since they want to live under Momma, but one is the closest to a completely black chick that we have gotten so far.

We are now up to 15 Seramas but struggling every other day to keep up with feeders and waterers. Seems we have to run to greens all the time for one more set. Does anyone have a good homemade design for a chick waterer? Right now we use quail waterers for the first week or two then regular chick waterers after that.

I will be at the swap, I am planning on bringing Fuego just to show him off and have a reason for people to talk to us. I really hope to meet as many people as I can. We will also have monster (the Sebright Bantam Roo) hoping to find him a new home.

Had a great Fathers Day. Spent the whole thing at home hanging out with my kids. Being that they are all adults it is pretty amazing that they want to hang out with dad.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome!

Knemeyer, which feed store do you go to? I went to the IFA store today at the I-15/I-215 on my way to work. They didn't have any chicks, but thought Sunset Saddle might. Any hints on where to get some locally? The people at IFA thought it was too late to mail order chicks as they would die from the heat during shipping.

Are there any chicken events in Las Vegas?

Again, thank you all for the welcome! This is a great site!

Meal Worms. Hey folks, I posted a couple weeks ago about my meal worm culture being over board. I sifted about 2000 worms out last weekend and expect to get even more than that this saturday. If anyone is interested in getting some of them at next to nothing or even nothing prices, let me know. I may need to ask you to bring your own cup but the worms are definitely fresh and good for a week or two of storage even on a shelf. They are fed on a mix of oatmeal, wheat bran and whole wheat flour. My birds are eating about 50 worms a day (15 birds, 4 adults and the rest chicks)

For Reno and vicinity folks I am asking $10.00 for approx 1000 worms if you can bring a container. I have not found a source for cups yet but am looking. PM Me and I will put you on a list and contact you when I have worms ready. If you don't need that many worms at once let me know I can make up something custom for you.

The last time I mentioned this I ended up putting together a complete grow your own worms set up for one member. So let me know what you are looking for.

I moved back to Vegas a few months ago and have been looking for poultry shows and a club to join in the area. I haven't had any luck and was wondering if someone here could point me in the right direction. Thanks

Penturner congrats on the 100% hatch!!!

The closest feed store to me is Jones Feed just off the 95 and Ann Road. They are located at Rancho and Lone Mountain. They use to get chicks on Wednesdays, but just changed to Thursdays. I'm actually going tomorrow to look for a few more chicks. I just had my chicks mail ordered from mypetchicken.com Monday and received them Tuesday. But you have to pay the hefty overnight or 2-day fee. From the signs posted when I was at Jones Saturday they have Easter Eggers (they say Auracanas, but they're not), Rhode Island Reds, Buff Orpingtons, White Leghorns, Barred Rocks, Polish and Bantams. I think they even had some turkeys. They have feed, waterers, feeders, nest boxes, and some other stuff. The only club I know of is CLUCK started by Leslie Doyle. She is a published Master Gardener that just got into chickens. She is having a swap and a meet up I believe in September (good source for getting birds) and is planning another coop tour in the Spring. You can email her at [email protected]. I haven't been to any of her events but I think a couple people from this Forum has so they can vouch for her better. She usually represents this area whenever they are testing new seeds in Organic Gardening magazine. Good luck!

@PennTurner, congratulations on your hatch rate! As they say, Mother Nature knows best. I'd love some of your mealworms, but that's a long drive!

new folks. Happy late birthday Sunny and congrats on the new birds to everyone else. Now that you've had a good hatch on the Seramas Penturner, I'll tell you about mine earlier this month. I didn't want to earlier because you weren't having great luck. Last month I traded dark egg layers for Seramas from VA and they sent 14 eggs. A couple of weeks back the hatch started over the weekend with everything fine on Sun. afternoon. Early Monday morning I found 8 dead chicks (2 Delaware, 6 Serama that didn't stand a chance) and an ant infested incubator. I fired up an extra incubator, moved everything over to it that didn't have any large pipped holes, blew out as many ants as I could on the others and moved them up in the racks on the same ant infested incubator because I didn't want to move the problem. As those couple of eggs hatched I quickly moved the chick over to the "clean" incubator. I still don't know why or where on the ants but 2 more Seramas hatched (8 of 14 for my first hatch on the little ones) and my own eggs were 28 of 30. I'll try and get some new pics sometime, just seem way too busy lately.

Hey Sunny, great job on the list.

Kenben, Congrats on a great hatch even with the ants. I am already pretty leery of ants when it comes to chicks, we have a lot of the tiny black ones around here. From what I have seen that is an above average hatch rate for Seramas in an incubator. I actually had to learn to incubate at all along with the challenge of a difficult breed. I would not recommend anyone follow that example. Hope you enjoy all the little ones.

here is Heilo and her babies.
So far two are names, Fudge and Mudpuddle. Light colored one is unnamed

Awwwww! So cute! As tiny as full grown Seramas are the babies must be the size of a large jelly bean!

Oh I would love a few mealworms as a treat for my babies. I don't have a large flock so I couldn't use very many though.
