Nevadans?

Please be careful while using the nipples with ACV. One day after I began using the nipples, I noticed my 2-week old chicks were frantically pecking at the nipples. When I used my finger to check the flow, no water was coming out! I offered the chicks a dish of water and they all drank for about 5 minutes. I inspected the inside of the bottle and discovered that several strands of the "mother" were collecting around the nipples. I rinsed the bottle and added ACV to the water and, within several hours, the nipples once again clogged. Now I use plain well water and no longer have a problem.

I'm not sure that I'll ever completely trust the nipples and I find myself compulsively checking them several times/day. I'm concerned that particles of shavings or dirt/sand may also cause them to clog so I'm thinking of going back to using the reliable fountain waterers.

Bloomie, With all of my 2 days of experience with a hen and chicks. I would say remove the extra eggs after the first ones hatch. The momma goes into caring for chicks mode once they hatch. she will still set for them to hide under her wings though so you might want to just keep a close eye on her and make moment by moment decisions. I just think it woudl be a conflict for her to have 3 or 4 day old chicks and still trying to set eggs.

laceynoelle, I gotta get a small cage set up for Fuego, But he will be their to represent Seramas. When I talked to the ladies running the swap they told me to just show up with whatever I have. I don't think they will kick you out if you just show up to meet people. I did tell them I was bringing a Rooster just for display and they loved the idea. I think they are really hoping for a turn out of any kind.

Several of our chicks have had the silvery shine to them. sadly it does not last when the feathers come in. and yes they do shine like that in real life.

Thanks for the heads up on egg laying chicks. I do now a lady that wants to get some egg layers for her family. I will pass on the news.

Go Denny Hamlin!

Nevada Desert Chick, Thanks for the warning. I am already ahead on that one. I have a long history of keeping animals of all types. I learned to trust nothing until it has proven itself. That is a lesson I learned the hard way when I lost a years worth of pigs in a 2 hour period when I was 14. I don't even trust light bulbs now.

i really dont think so, but i dsont think anyone on here is actually associated with the swap. the woman i talked to who is running it seemed super nice and i think its something everyone can go to. she runs a poultry club here in norhtern nevada and i think planned this event to try and get chicken people together .

Having experience, even if it is 2 days, is what makes this place a great source fo info! Thanks again,

Egg #5 is pipping this morning!
We wernt planning on the hen raising the chicks.....so heres our plan..... IF we get a live one from Egg #5 we'll move it to the brooder tank and hope that she continues to set on the other 4 eggs for a few more days..

From pictures here on BYC the other eggs appear to be between 14 and 17 days.......wondering if I should go buy an incubator just in case we need to finish the eggs ourselves.....BUT would we be messing up the chicks if we did it so late?
I mean, how would putting them in an incubator now at 14-17 days effect what ya'll call "lock down"?

Think I need more coffee to open my eyeballs so I can read up some more!

I picked up 2 more chicks today from Jones Feed. All they got in today was banties and polish. I picked out two polish, but one appears to be a mix. The gal up front thought it was a polish silkie bantam mix. It has an extra back toe and is all white. Here are some pics, anyone have any guesses what color the darker one will be and what the white one is would be welcome.

This picture is a little truer color. The flash kept washing out the color.

Here is the white one. It's got some feathers on the feet and his the poof like the polish and has an extra back toe.

I couldn't resist some pics of my kids with the white crested black polish chick. My MIL asked her to name a chicken after her so we decided this would be a good one. It's name is Nan (hopefully not a rooster!)

Awwww they are super cute! Thanks for the pics!

Bloomie, congrats on the new little hatchlings! I would place the younger eggs in the brooder. The hen will probably assume that the other eggs are not viable once she has heard and seen the oldest ones hatching. Brooding for so long takes a toll on hens and she will most likely mourn the loss of the chicks taken away and refuse to brood any longer. Once they start peeping you can try to put them back under her but watch to see if she is responding well to them before you leave her to them. Good luck!

Echetino the coop looks great! Looks like you are about ready to roll.

I am bummed that I won't be able to make the chicken swap this weekend! I have been so pushing for something in our area and now when we finally get it, I can't make it. We have to head out to Page, AZ to pick up our SUV (we blew the engine while on vacation and the guy can't store it any longer. The oil pump went out and the computer also malfunctioned so it didn't alert us to the problem). Anybody want to take a couple more birds with you to sell/donate? I was going to donate anything that didn't sell at the swap.

Horsefeatherz those little Delawares I got are the friendliest things!!! The other young ones are still at the skittish stage (though they are starting to warm up to us) but the Delawares never seemed to go through this stage (well maybe a little, for a couple of weeks). They come running to me as soon as they see me, just like the older girls do. Even braving the big chickens to fight for attention! They are the cutest things! So far they are not tripping me up though like Obby always did. They do seem aware of where my feet are.

Are all Delawares such social butterflies?

Sunny, those crosses are very friendly – worse when they really start laying. The older two Pansy and Petunia, will go between my legs while I am walking. Crazy girls.

Whew, finally got pictures taken, sorted, and uploaded.

One of them – not sure which, but there are the boys in the background wondering what I am doing over with the chicks and why I am not admiring them (two are the two you raised Sunny).

A good example of their “niceness”

And finally……..drum roll…………..Flrpl (yes it is spelled right) cockerel

Here is a picture of Flrpl and a white splash Orp/Cochin cross chick – the white chick is closest to the camera.

Their names are a bit unusual – I asked my DH to come up with a purple name for the Lavender cockerel - but not Barney.

Flrpl is a character from a tv show that played in the Seattle area when he was a youngin' (JP Patches) so I took the Flrpl name and Gertrude who is another character from the show. He also watched a show called H.R. Puff ‘n’ Stuff - so I named the black cockerel HR and the other black pullet Witchie Poo. I need to get the pullets marked, I can tell them apart when sitting with them, but not on camera
