Nevadans?

Nice photos, sheryl! Your garden will be great! You fit a lot into that space. Hope justin settles down for you.

good luck catching the egg eating culprits, sunny! that is really frustrating, i'm sure. We've just had a few accidents where an egg gets cracked and they gobble it up. I try to grab anything I can away from them if I see it.

Quick question....as I have mentioned I moved the broodies and their 11 chicks into my grow out pen with is about 4'x12'. They are locked in this space,(fully covered and safe). Since the day before I moved them all the chicks have mostly taken to one of the broodies and the other just tries to tuck herself in close and take what ever chicks will sleep under her.

I have noticed that the one mom really controls everything and I saw two tail feathers on the floor. This morning the one broodie was at the door and when I went in and she headed towards the other mom and chicks the mom put her head down and ran after her.

I opened the door and offered to let the other girl out and she came. She walked all around the pen clucking and calling the chicks. I opened the door and let her back in and a couple of the chicks came to her but I had to shoo them back in since they were following mom out. The chicks ran back to the other mom and the broodie came out with me.

So much for a quick question huh? OK, so I left the girl out. Do you think this is OK? Is 11 chicks too many to get under one mom. The grow out pen is on the ground. I'm going in to try to open the store today. Business hasn't been good enough on Tues to warrant employees so I have posted summer hours and closed on Tues but I'm going crazy, getting very depressed with losing my sweet dog and 2 1/2 months of trying to let my back heel so I'm going to try to open and see how long I can make it......so I won't be around to hear any issues!

Before I leave do you think I should put the girl back in or do you thing the one mom can take them all.....do they need a light....which would be tough to put in the grow out pen since it's not near electricity and has a dirt/shavings floor.....I'd have to move everyone to the barn....???????

Wow Sheryl those pictures are great!

Sorry to hear about your chicken troubles Sunny. I occasionally find a cracked open egg in my nest boxes but they don't seem to make a habit of it.
Yeah this is chronic. The one roo and hen we caught were so bad they were hovering over a poor pullet before she even laid the egg! The second she laid it they practically attacked her to scare her off then went after the egg. That was a very coordinated effort.
I wanna see the new coop Sunny make sure you post pics the second it's done. I gave always liked the breeder coops like you will have.
Me too! I've been drooling over them for awhile now. Can't wait much longer! :)

Any chicken will eat an egg once it's broken. It's normally not a problem (though if I do break an egg in front of a chicken I try to grab up the shell quickly). I've dropped quite a few eggs over years of chicken keeping and have only had this problem twice now. So I wouldn't worry too much about them eating an occasional cracked egg.

Lol sunny I'm just giving you heck because I finally think we found something that the youth here recognizes that you guys don't! It's the duck that the penguin rode in the old batman movie! Weeee!!!

My hens finally started laying again. Hopefully my buffs go broody soon. We'll see if my RIR cock is working.
Sheryl is the lady that took Jack ***** (that evil Silkie I got rid of at APA) still on here? I can't remember her name

Uggh, an egg eater isn't something I'm looking forward to. A few days ago I though I had one, since I found an uncracked egg with goo on the outside. I looked close and found a bit of shell from another egg. I'm guessing one just broke and got eaten, since I haven't found any other evidence in any of the nests.

Today I stopped by Sierra Feed for some Flock Raiser, and my daughter pointed out the baby chicks. After a brief look, I said, "Don't touch them. Step back." Two of the five chicks had eyes swollen shut, and one lay listless in a corner. After paying, we asked for hand sanitizer. I didn't say, in front of the other customers, "Your chicks are extremely sick." They probably thought we were using sanitizer because Sahara had held a customer's micro-pig. I mean, how could you NOT look at those chicks and see they were sick???

Sorry I haven't been very active on the site. These past two weeks, I've been dealing with extreme exhaustion. Just got back from the doctor, and he's been trying to figure it out. I have to go take a nap right now, so I can go get my kids from school. After 8 hours of sleep I'm still so exhausted that I'm dizzy and nauseated, needing 2 naps a day. The garden isn't getting planted, and is barely getting watered. Which isn't so bad, considering the cold snap this weekend, but still... I don't have time for this kind of stuff!
