Nevadans?

I think that's what I'm going to name my baby. Pico de Gallo. Or Pocito de Gallina.

This is her, while I was waiting to see if the other two would hatch.

Mind if I post a few garden pics? I went a little camera crazy today. To be polite, these are just the highlights:

Garden #2:

The heirloom beans I got from Sheryl are on the right:

A little color:

Zucchini gone wild:

The driveway garden, sheltered from the sun:

And a security breach:

Ha Ha I love that last pic.

I posted it in the CA thread but wanted to post it here too. I went out to put bottles of ice with my rabbits and my little black OEGB hen had had a nest hidden somewhere and has one baby that looks like her and one that looks like Daddy (Snack). The 2 broodies I knew about are still holding tight, but it was 104 here today. These birds don't quit for anything.

Congrats on the chickie. Sorry the other's didn't make it though. And I love the names! Can't wait to see which one it's gonna be.

Mom and baby are in the new coop. She tried to teach her baby to eat, but baby just wanted to huddle under her feathers. So they're cuddling right now. And Oh'no is standing guard.

The mini fan is in the coop, clipped to aim at the nesting boxes. White sheets are draped over all the painted areas, and over the whole top of the mini coop. I filled disposable cups with water and they're in the freezer now, waiting to be dropped in animal water when it gets super hot. 77 degrees at 9am... let's bring it on!

Aubrey, I am sorry to hear about loosing your hen and your air conditioning pooping out! What a terrible time to have that happen with this heat wave!

The thing to look for in your incubating eggs is the veins near the air cell. Those are the easiest to see. If you don't see veining there then the chick has died. If the egg quit, the blood veins will empty and settle into the middle of the egg and you will see a blood ring. Don't base the lack of movement as a sign the chicks aren't alive. I have had them duck and hide at the bottom of the egg when you shine the light in

Hope you get some to hatch

Oh missy congrats to you and your little miracle chick! SHE made it through all that broody musical chairs!

Mine are on day 18 tomorrow and i went and bought a good LED flashlight so I could take one good look at them before I cant touch em anymore, and i think theyve both quit. There is good development, but no movement at all that I could see. The EE egg seems to have what I can only describe as "some liquidy bits" above the airsac line. I have no clue what that means but it cant be good. Is it normal to not see movement? this late in the game would they start to develop blood rings if they had passed? I dont really see eggs surviving this heat, especially since incubation temps are LOWER than what it was today! *sigh*

well things do happen in threes I guess. After working my ten hour shift and biking home (mark is out of town with my car) in this heat, I walked inside and was blasted with hot air. 95* in here and the dog and cats are half dead. The pump has already gone out. Im so hot and sick and tired I could just cry. This week sucks.
Hope it gets fixed fast! sounds like your dad will be able to help you out. the pump is easy to replace. that's the great thing about swamp coolers--you can fix them yourself unlike a/c which is more complicated. i hope your animals are ok.
We have one healthy baby, who hatched out before noon. The others tried to hatch between 1 and 5pm today, and didn't make it. It looks like they got caught up in the membrane, and it dried out, even though Tom Ka Gai was being a good mommy. I tried to wash down the outside of the nesting box a few times, and even draped it with an old white sheet. I think the air was just too dry.

Tomorrow I'll put them in the mini coop. The second set of eggs is due to hatch around the 25th.
yay for the little one!

good job Tom Ka Gai!
Wowza, lots going on, and TOO MUCH HEAT. I'm still looking for a job, and especially missing my previous positions where I got to enjoy ac during the day. Anyone know of someone hiring?
what kind of job are you looking for?
Hi StevieNay

I haven't seen your name before but then I haven't been subscribed to this group for very long either.

I was just wondering something... I've had to cut my salt intake, due to my kidneys, and I LOVE guacamole. We usually use a premix from an envelope but since cutting my salt, I have found that this stuff is just too salty for me even though I never noticed it before.

Do you make your own guacamole without a premix? If so, would you be willing to share your recipe? Or anyone else for that matter... I miss the guacamole!
no need for a mix with guac-- just onion, cilantro, a little lime juice can throw in serrano or jalapeno peppers if you want and even tomato. make it however you and your family like it.

Seeing your garden photos, Missy, I think i need to add more straw for my mulch.

Anyhoo, Jose just had a phone interview for a job and got invited to an in person interview at 2 today. It's for material handler/warehouse and the pay sucks but oh well. it gets his foot in the door and back in the work force. It would be swing shift 2-10:30pm after a training period in days for 2 weeks. The timing would work good for watching the kids when they are off track (year round school schedule). the afterschool care during the week is not too expensive.

it works out.

Good luck, Jose!

And that deep straw mulch is a LIFESAVER for the garden! I can water once in the morning, and leave it all day. And it doesn't reflect heat, so the eggplants and squash can lie on top of it without burning up or rotting. Plus I can till it in at the end. It's not recommended if there are a lot of earwigs, but luckily this garden doesn't have many bugs yet. You could probably dust the straw with DE after watering, for any bugs that hide under it.

I am SO jealous! What a gorgeous garden! Did you guys build a block wall to enclose it and then add good dirt? What kind of a box is that containing your zucchini?
