Just had my first real scare this evening. Was checking on the chicks for the evening and noticed the silver laced polish looking like she was kinda gasping for air. I finally picked her up and looked like she had some feed stuck at the back of her throat. I picked her up and ran to my room to get some tweezers and help from the hubby if needed. He was not happy about being woken up about a chick! Well, I took the tweezers and after trying to be delicate and noticing she was getting weaker, I dove in and grabbed the feed out. It was soggy so it took a few grabs. She was a little stressed, but seems to be sleeping fine now. I have to say this, but I was running around like a chicken with my...well, you know the rest. Kinda strange that all of a sudden I get this urgent need to check on them and find something funky going on each time. Learning not to ignore the little voice in my head!

laceynoelle, I have seen quite a few of your photos. You have the right stuff. Learning to use the camera as the tool it is is one thing. With enough practice and study anyone can get that. You have the eye of an artist as well. that is not learned.

As for lighting and such. I photograph my pens and stuff. it requires a light box and all that as well. doing the same for the birds is just a bigger scale. might be better to think along the lines of reflectors and lights on stands. I had a couple of 500 watt photo flood lights around. I am not sure what happened to them but if I find them you are welcome to them. I can also help with figuring out a way to set them up on stands.

I will PM you about getting photos so we can work out details.

I checked out the link. Those are Seramas, it's the quality that would be the big question. Also mailing eggs does not work real well with them. I have been getting some of my birds from Members of the SCNA. For the moment I have what we need for ourselves. Now we have to get them grown up and making babies. I am waiting to see if our one hen will start laying again. If so we will start having some chicks to sell soon.

Knemeyer. good save. I am always grateful when I read posts here on BYC that I got past a lot of the no seeum type mistakes long long ago. I see the knot holes before birds loose their heads and that sort of stuff. Still you have to be heads up all the time cause there is going to be something. So far I havn't had any birds even hurt, knock on wood.

We have been busy building a cage that will hold up to 16 birds. It is actually 4 cages built one on top of the other and stands almost 8 feet tall. All of our birds will be moved to it inside my heated shop any time the temperature drops below 40 degrees. If I had to I could squeeze up to 24 birds in there but they would not be very happy. It will be a lot of carrying birds back and forth so I am trying to train them to go from the runs to the cage on their own.

So sorry Laceynoelle, I was so swamped this weekend that I didn't even get a chance to wish you all a happy 4th! I had a ton of chores and my best friend is going through a real tough time right now so DH and I have been staying close 'til she feels better. Great close up pics! Now you've got me curious about my girls eyes.

Love the pics you all have posted, thanks! Great to see this thread so busy. Congrats on all the new chickies!

Echetino sorry about your chick, sounds like you have a good attitude about it though. Good luck with the rest of them!

Knemeyer, great intuition! I wish I were that in tune to trouble.

Aubreynoramarie Darla is adorable. I agree, Nevada Ron, we need pics of her in her new home.

(yes, I am a little addicted to chicken pics).

Bloomie my first hatch was in a homemade incubator made with 2 boxes and a bunch of newspaper between them for insulation. I had a 70% hatch rate and I had no thermostat! I depended on my students to turn them during the day and my temp control was an oven/food thermometer that beeped every time it got too hot. I slept with it next to my bed at night and would lift the lid with my toe until it cooled down (DH was not very happy with this set-up though). My humidity control was to fill up the bowl I placed in there when it got low. I did tape a plexiglass window into the top of the cardboard lid so my students didn't have to raise the lid every time they wanted to peek at the eggs but that is as high tech as it got!
I put an X on 1 side of each egg so the students knew that each egg had been turned an odd number of times each day and made sure they were coached on the basics but we did no candling (kids are clumsy and candling for them was a big fat NO), no hygrometer, no fan (I did drill holes for ventilation), no lockdown... you get the idea. I even liked that the kids had to learn to deal with the fact that not all the chicks made it. That's part of life. Well good luck with the next hatch. You are teaching your grandkids lessons they will never forget.

Echetino I have an extra Delaware if you want her. They are the friendliest girls! Here's a pic of her at 9 weeks (she is 11 and 1/2 weeks now).
