Nevadans?

Hey guys, Though I would share a picture of my setup. It's an 8x11 coop. I've for some reason been sort of unhappy with something about it but I can't quite put my finger on it . It's not very aesthetically pleasing haha, but it works for the girls. The perches suit everyone well so far. It's about three feet wide so the step perches with the one long one equal about 18 feet. The underneath part works well for my frizzled Cochins who like to sleep on the floor. Keeping as mich space on the ground as possible is really important to me for those blustery days when the birds have to stay in.

So I was wondering why we only got 10 eggs on Wednesday after getting 18 on Tuesday. Then I looked in the coop and they had pulled the straw out from under the nest boxes and made a rogue nest there. there were 11 eggs in there! One was a tiny cream colored pullet egg so I think the jaerhon have started laying. I found another tiny cream colored egg out in the run. I took photos and will post tonight.

My other excitement of the day was that a shelf in my kitchen cabinet collapsed all of a sudden last night. it was holding a lot of my heavy good dishes but the cabinet doors didn't open all of the way so the majority of dishes hadn't fallen yet and I was able to rescue the stuff and only 2 bowls broke. there were crappy plastic pieces holding up the shelves so I'm surprised it lasted this long. Luckily I had some sturdy metal shelf pins in the tool kit and was able to replace for that shelf and the shelf above it.

Hope you are feeling better sunny!

sorry about your RIR, Ron.

Oh, I took too long to write my post and now there are more.

Hope you find your girl this afternoon, aubrey. I like your set up. I've thought about putting a ladder type roost instead of the flat roosts I have. Haven't decided what will work best yet. I built a ladder one out in the run.

Do they fight about getting access to the food and water? If so, maybe move it into the middle so they can access all sides.
Oh wow Sunny, it sounds like you have the same type of infection that hit me earlier this year. When you rub your neck you can actually hear it in your ear as if you're actually rubbing your ear. Ouch is right as well with it. I'm mostly deaf in my right ear from having too many ear infections, I was a swimmer and I was on swim team as well growing up and the ear infections was just part of it.

I'm sorry but I'm with Ron on this one as well. I will never live in the Bay Area again. It's just way too crowded there for me and depending on which side of the bay you want to be on the people are just plain rude a lot of the time. I have seen people actually driven off the road. I go there several times a year still because I have a ton of family still living there. When I see one of my cousins he's actually so jittery just from commuting back and forth to work. I know once he's out of there he will be able to relax but right now there is no way he can. I feel sorry for him because he's stuck there right now. I have 3 sets of cousins who are planning on moving to Oregon to get away from there once they can afford it.

How's all your chickens doing Elizabeth?

Missy, I'll have Wednesday off is that okay for the grapes? I won't have much time other than that though because of the drawings we are having at work.

Kim, I so wish you can move this way. You have no idea how much more relaxing it is here from there. Most of your pain would just go away because you won't be so tense all of the time with all the drama you get there. Besides, you have a ton of people who want your lavender egg laying chickens, like me.

I'm having an ultrasound done on my liver Tuesday to see how it is doing. Let's hope all is well. I go to my doctor on the 11th. He's spoken to the UCSF transplant doctors and it sounds like they told him what he should be doing with me. My sister was sent to an Oncologist and boy was she scared. The doctor ran a bunch of tests on her and x-ray'ed her whole body except for her hands and feet. Not sure what they are looking for. I'm hoping they did a phenotype on her finally because right now she's still in denial regarding this genetic disease. My dad has finally stepped up though and I feel so much better. The last time I spoke to my sister I was telling her what my doctor was doing and all she said was: "Well I don't have it so I don't really care." I have not spoken to her since and I really don't know when I will for a very long time. I guess she just does not understand the support I need here. Oh well, it's really her loss.

Not sure if anyone has notice yet or not but we are just a couple of posts away from the big 1,500! Who's going to end up getting it?

My chickens are doing good, thanks for asking! I hope your ultrasound goes well. Maybe your sister will come around in time.
Anyone on here have polish chickens?
Several on here have Polish but I don't, yet...

Thanks for the sympathy everyone! It was Rosie - one of my first birds and my biggest RIR.

That's a real bummer about your shelf Elizabeth! Sounds like the damage wasn't too bad though and someone could have been hurt by it so that's a blessing, too.

Your coop looks awesome Aubrey! It seems to be very roomy. Looks like your birds like it, too!

So glad I don't have to deal with wolves Missy. Though coyotes visit most nights. Which is why my birds are in enclosed runs!

Aubrey, I know what your coop is missing! COLOR! Everything you do is about beautiful colors and your coop is that drab grey you don't like! Find a way to paint it and you'll be very happy with it! Please find your little girl!

Thanks Elizabeth but it will take a semi truck for her to go and get phenotyped instead of seeing what her levels are. You don't know if you have the gene or not if you don't get phenotyped. It's up to her now.

Missy, I can't come to the canning class on the 11th. The other person who does the drawings is going to take that week off so I'll need to be at work at the time your class starts. What a bummer because I'm ready to make my garlic dill pickles since John just opened the last jar of those now.

Ron, that's such a bummer about your RIR. I'm really sorry.

Actually that was 15,000 FlamingChicken! Or 1500 pages!

I know if Sunny was feeling better she would say congratulations to everyone who has contributed to this thread!

Yippee for us!
Well I've had two disasters this week. I lost another RIR. I don't know what it was since it wasn't really that hot anymore.

Then, yesterday, "wild" (or "feral" as my friend Cynthia [another horse person] constantly reminds me

) horses started eating my corn!

#$%^&*! mangy glue factory rejects!

Awe, sorry about the RIR....and the corn!
Aw poo Ron. Sorry bout your bird. One of my super ultra rare expensive Mille fleur leghorns was not in th coop last night. I looked for a while but figured it was probably futile since they're so cautious and flighty. I hope I see her when I get home from work today.

Shoot Aubrey, hope she's just been hoarding some eggs and is trying to nest some where. Hate when I come home late and have to search for one after dark. You know its just about impossible to find a sleeping chicken!

I think it looks great. Looks like you have plenty of space to roost, store feed, lighting, light, fresh air. I don't see anything I would change.

I do! Love, love, love them!

Last night I came home and got out of my truck and heard LOUD peeping from LOTS of chicks. I went up to the coop and found all but one of the nine Polish chicks out of the Polish pen in the other coop. All the older chickens were in the coop tucked in for the night but the Jr's were standing outside looking in, not sure what to do!
lau.gif
I opened the door between the too coops and shooed the little ones into the right pen and mom finally came out squawking at them for coming home late! I can see this will be a problem until they're too big to get through the fence. I already had a wayward chick this morning. I put it back in and it ran right back out when it saw my EE that has 4 of the Polish chicks she hatched. Very confusing for them all!

Tonight's my late night at the wine bar so I hope my husband hears any peeping and goes to help them. He says there's so many he doesn't know who belongs to who but I told him they know so if they're crying, they don't belong where they are!

We're at 16 chicks, 13 Polish and 3 EE's. The EE's are still hatching but I don't think I'll get but one more since mom's spending a lot time managing the chicks. I'll be glad when everyone's done hatching. It's been 2 1/2 weeks of chicks hatching. I'm ready to just see mom's and chicks running around.

Elizabeth you are so right. None of my girls ever fight but sometimes the little ones have to wait for the big ones to stop pigging out. I'll try it out

And Sheryl I think you nailed it. Isn't it SO BORING?!?!? Next year after the wedding we will be repairing and painting the back deck and I'm going to have to figure out a way to paint it to match...

Wow - 2½ weeks worth! That is so cool. You all are giving me hatching fever. I need to try and raise a replacement Poppy anyway since he's being such a turd.

Oops lost some quotes again. Sheryl IDK about rubbing the neck and hearing it in my ear. By the time I went in to see the doc the infection had spread to my neck and jaw so it hurts to just sit here much less rub it. I won't describe what else is going on since some of you may be trying to eat.
WOW! My younger brother left the door open so now the chickens got into my room! (its 5am here)

1500!!!
Wow CONGRATS on being the 15,000th post!!!

You are so right Ron! Inside I am sooooo excited! But it's painful to even type right now... So sorry about your RIR! That sure is expensive, gourmet feed for those horses!

Sounds wonderful. Chaotic but wonderful.

wow! so cute to have that many chicks running around. But I'm sure it'll be a relief to be done hatching.

Maybe you'll need to do a series of paintings to hang in your coop.

Paint Elvis, you and Mark and your cats so the chickens have something to look at.
