Nevadans?

Sorry about everyone's bad luck. I had some myself. I had ordered some Bev Davis eggs a few months ago and only 3 out of 24 hatched. One died right after hatching. This week I lost the other two. I don't think the kids had roosting down right even though I out them all up. It looks like they piled in a corner for the night and my 2 FBCMs were at the bottom. I have zero FBCMs from this year. I also lost my Lav Marans project chicks. I'm so bummed.

I did have a good hatch this week. That makes 2 100% hatches in a row, so I'm feeling better about all my horrible hatches the past year.

Ron, I think it's a matter of how much ACV you want to use. When I have something I want to clear up, I start with 3 glasses a day and then you can go down to one a day. A lot of people can barely do one glass. Back when I was good about it I did 2. Usually before meals is best. I don't and never have done 3 meals a day. If I eat in the morning, I'm done for the day. It makes me sleepy, which makes me grumpy and grumpier if I nap. I'm not good at naps. What you might want to do is pick up a copy of a book written by ______ Bragg. They usually carry it in good healthy food stores. I wish I knew the name. I just can't think if it now, I have it in storage somewhere. I had to buy that book and hand it to Bill when we first started dating, because he told me what I was doing was not healthy. I didn't read it, but I gave to him to read. He would point out things in the book and say he couldn't believe all the things they claimed it did, but when I used it for my calcium deposits he was sold on the fact that it did work. Then I read it and found more things I didn't know about, so it was a good buy and I think it was less than 10 bucks. I had had those deposits for a year before I met him. My son had been in the hospital for months and I stayed there with him. I just didn't have access to the stuff. Then I had a lot of things I went through after Dakotah was released and wasn't thinking about me. So by the time I got things straight I was in so much pain, I was afraid to go to ht e doctor. I just knew I was going to need surgery on my back and neck. Bill took me in after we met and he had said he thought that was what was wrong. He explained the surgery and I told him what I was going to do. He thought I was nuts. It only took a few days for the pain to become tolerable and then every day I could feel the difference in the lump. Bill was shocked to say the least and I got to prove to my "Medical Professional" as I called him, that simple things sometimes can surprise you.

Polish can be some really dingy birds. My last flock I started out with Polish and Doms. No one else I ever talked to about Polish agreed that they had some issues. I know it is from their being blinded from the crests, but I still say they are dingy. I loved them and want more, but they are some goofy birds. We would let the birds out in the yard early in the morning. At night we'd go out, count and close the coops. There was more than one time............more than 30 times, let's be real. It happened a whole lot, especially in winter. We'd go out and they'd be missing. It was like the sun started to go down and they didn't move fast enough to get to the coop and the light. Bill, the kids and myself would grab the flashlights, which he kept right beside the sliding door, and go on a Polish hunt. We'd find them hunkered down under plants, under lawn furntiure, and right in the middle of the lawn. Sometimes we'd find them right next to the coop, but it got to dark before they walked to the back and saw the light inside. DENSE! They were the doopiest things I ever saw. It was funny though. That is if it wasn't storming outside or something. But it happened a lot. We were always so worried about stepping on them when they were on the lawn. We'd shine the lights around untill we saw a bright white spot and follow the crests. LOL Man I miss those birds. Especially my little Pulletta. She was my baby and she'd always run to me to tattle on the other birds and for me to protect her. She was lowest in pecking order, but she knew I had her back.

Kim, sorry about the bad hatch!

I feel like a stranger on this board. Lol, I think that says something about how often I post, and me needing a life. Actually, I'm right in the middle of canning season, and living off of energy drinks to stay ahead of food getting too ripe. Last night I caught up on the plums, and this morning I checked the pears... they're getting ripe. A couple of them were perfect. I can run the ripe ones through the dehydrator to hold off until Monday, but I'm also going to teach some friends how to can for a few hours at their house. Thank goodness the husband and kids are home all day Monday and can help me with housework and yardwork that has NOT gotten done.

So I think one of my chickens has progeria. You know Noodle the ameraucana that started laying SUPER early? Well now she's broody.

Sorry about the poor hatch and then losing the chicks, but so glad to see you're having other success on your hatches. Things are turning around!

I think Polish being dingy depends on breeding (like anything you breed). I've read people have trouble with them being flighty or the roos being mean but mine are all SO calm and so sweet! I was just sitting in the pen having my coffee and watching the new chicks and all the adults were all over me wanting to be pet or sit on my lap....or have a cup of coffee!

I do agree their crests can be an issue and I do startle them from time to time but not an ounce of aggression and they always make their way into the coop at night...although they are the last to go to bed! I usually wait until they're all in because otherwise they see me coming and they all come back out to greet me. I have to go right to their coop first to close the doors before they're all back out!

I'm really excited about some of the colors I got from this hatch. It's going to be exciting to see what they turn out. However, I think I sold the roo that's responsible for the different colors I'm getting.

Mine were very sweet. When I had to give up that flock everyone raved about how mellow and sweet they all were. Back then I'd only have maybe 25 chicks at a time and I'd pick them up all the time and hold them. They'd walk right up and climb in the palm of your hand. I had lots of breeds though and all of them were like that. These days I know chicks are leaving and with doiing everything myself I just never have the time to realy do that. But my Polish were awesome. They just got lost in the dark at times. LOL

OH I just read about you selling the roo. I did that this past year. I was working towards those purple eggs and had gotten rid of all the cockerels. Just didn't think I'd see a lavender egg so soon. A lot of those chicks went to Nevada with Sunny, so if anyone has them, let me know if you get any lavender eggs!

Yes the ones I got from you are super friendly and very curious. Not agressive at all! I do have a problem with them not all going in when it's dark though. Not sure what to do about that other than the flashlight thing.

Sorry, no sign of a lavender egg here! POO!!! :(

However I do have some good news. I feel a tiny bit better today and was able to eat some chicken noodle soup today! YEA! Been on tea, broth and yogurt for 4 days now. Feels good to eat something else for a change. Plus the swelling on the side of my face and neck is down a little and there is no more bleeding in that ear, so I think I'm on the mend! Woo hoo!

Trying to post pics again...

Great to hear Sunny. Been thinking about you and that ear infection.

I went out to check the nest boxes I gave up and set on the patio. A Jovi baby about 5 months old has tried to become a carry around pet like Baby the bantam Fav. I bent over and she fly up on my shoulder and then when I stood she slide down my back. Tank top and chicken toes don't mix. LOL No broken skin and I think I have an itch I may ask her to scratch.

My itty bitty hoop coops are taking over the yard. I'm going ot work on 2 big ones to get everyone out of the yard and do some gopher distuction. These darn things. I about break my ankles trying to walk through the yard. Only have a small section to turn and then have my SIL put a sprinkler system in for me and hopefully I'll have a nice lawn. The one area that was even half way growing with veggies is now dirt. I forgot to cover it with the poultry netting. Stupid me! I swear, it looks like nothing at all was there. These birds are like locust! And then they had the nerve to chase me with my tool bucket that is just like the ones I use for holding feed. I think NOT! Looks like Berkeley in the 60's and everyone has the munchies.
