aubreynoramarie I'm glad it's working out! They're a great looking bunch
smile.png

aubreynoramarie, I'm glad they are getting along. I know all my birds don't like any sort of change at first but after three days they forget how it used to be.

aubreymarie,

The silkie you picked up for me had a hard time assimilating with the group, but last night they all roosted together and seem to all be happy. So, maybe a little more time will totally break Darla's mean streak.

Hope everyone is enjoying the heat. Have been busy this past week planting tree starts, so in a few years I should have some shade
cool.png
Maybe then I can work on some grass.

Everyones' pictures look great.

aubreynoramarie It is fantastic that the chicks are starting to work it out.

laceynoelle Your swans sound like a pinioned pair so they cannot fly
sad.png
makes it easy to keep them "contained" but still makes me a bit sad. Very cool having swans in your yard! *jealous me*

Good Saturday Morn to Ya'll!
frow.gif

We have a beautiful blue sky the day after the monster storm system with lightening, thunder and wind that left behind a broken tree. ....reckon it could'a been worse.
The granchickie & me painted the nest boxes and the wood trim inside the coop yesterday. She's got plans to paint a "design" on the lid to the outside nest box we rigg'dup for summer egg layin'.
Be a "interestin" what "design" she comes up with!
lol.png

There was alot of noise comin' from the coop with all the new hens.
Yer all probably more familiar with the tell tale "BokBOOOKCluckcluckBokBOOOOK" of the first egg on the way
lol.png

We kept runnin' to the hen house to see if there was an egg, but nothin'
hu.gif

.....this mornin' we saw our first egg!
ya.gif
, altho it was broken
hmm.png

The first egg was a small, dark brown, narrow oval, with a beautiful dark orange-yellow yolk.
One of the hens laid it, or plopped it out
lol.png
, on the shelf thats under the roosting bar.
Apparently it cracked when it landed the shelf.

Heres some questions for ya'll.

Theres 26 hens in the hen house, dont know
hu.gif
which one laid the egg
hu.gif

The hen count is:
All are approximately 17 weeks accordin' to the feed store info.
4 Buff Orpington
4 RIR
4 Gold Sex liknks
5 Black Sex Links
4 Easter Eggers
w/ 1 SURPRISE EE Roo
lol.png

3 Autralorp w/
1 SURPRISE Australorp Roo
lol.png

2 Barred Rock

We've had nest boxes in place with plastic eggs in them for several days, hopin' to plant the ideer in there lil brains where to lay the "golden eggs"
lol.png
, but obviously the ideer dint git across clearly yet.

Anyhoooo, how do ya encourage layin' in a nest box?
Should I make a layin' nest on the shelf since one layed there?
We need to make a run to town for chicken feed so I'm wonderin' what I should but at this point.
I read that ya start the egg layer pellets after they begin layin', but bein' not all a re layin' yet, is it messin' up the one that is laying to not have layer pellets yet?
Or is it alright to offer all the hens layer pellets?

Thankin' ya in advance fer yer input.

Okay folks I finally have it all together to offer meal worms. It took a while to get containers that I like.
1.5 oz of worms (Approx. 500 worms) $10.00
3 oz. (Approx 1000 worms) $15.00
8 oz. (A whole lotta worms) $25.00
Add $5.00 for priority flat rate postage

Send me a PM and an e-mail address and I can send you an invoice that can be paid online.

Horsefeathers. With the right trees it may not be all that long waiting for that shade. Problem is from what I have seen it is pretty random just what tree will grow fast in a particular spot. Here is wishing you luck with yours.

Bloomie, My one laying hen sort of laid them anywhere for the first few days. She did finally find a single spot to her liking. It sounds like you are doing the right stuff to encourage them to the nest boxes but I am not sure there is anything you can do to make them use them.

horsefeathers, i can send you a recomemded tree list if youre going to plant any more. We have all kinds of handouts we give to customers on what grows good ehre and what gets the best results, etc.

Penturner, Im not going to be able to come today. Im so sorry, especially for the late notice.

You might need to get a different photographer.

Hello everybody! (I always feel like Grover on Sesame Street when I type that, except he said "everybodeee". Flash backs to when my kids were little.
lol.png
)

Anyway, it looks like another gorgeous day out there! Except my hens don't like to lay as often when it gets much above 90.

Bloomie, from what I've read, starting them on layer feed before they are all laying is a bad idea. It will delay the start of laying for the others. You can put a bowl of oyster shell in the feed area and the ones that need it will, supposedly, eat it on their own. As for getting the pullets to start laying in the nests, the plastic egg thing always worked for me but the first couple of eggs always seem to catch them by surprise, like they're not sure what's going on. They will get the idea eventually (hopefully).
hmm.png
Still, that first egg sure is exciting isn't it?!!

Aubreynoramarie, that's awesome! I've heard that once the pecking order is established it rarely changes but maybe removing her for a couple of days and inserting Agnes while she was gone is what did the trick. Anyway congrats!

Echetino no problem. I really didn't want to get rid of any of my gals, they are all so sweet and it's a lovely flock dynamic I have going right now, I just know I should!
roll.png
I have a small backyard and I have 27 girls right now. They have taken over the whole backyard but I'm so attached to them I can't resist letting them have the run of the whole place.

Humbrd how are the boys doing? I accidently gave all my boys to you! I thought I had 1 more black roo but when I finally got a chance to give them a thorough look-see I realized my goof! Do you still have them all?

Laceynoelle, love your new avatar! Can I get a copy of that tree list too? I planted several trees when we first moved here but only 2 are doing well. 1 is a nectarine tree that has never fruited (every year I have had cloudy/windy/rainy weather every time the tree blooms and bumble bees won't fly in anything but calm sunshine. It's killing me!) but the lack of fruit means it has put all it's energy into beautiful growth.

laceynoelle, No problem. We had a Neice come into town at the last minute and are going over to have a BBQ with her and the rest of the family at 6:00. It was going to be a tight squeeze for me since the BBQ is about a 40 minute drive from here.

Sunny, We are loving the weather. Me more than the rest since the heat does not get to me as much. But the early mornings and evenings are good for everyone.
