Nevadans?

Awww, sweet! Pot and Pie are living with the big girls now, but they have yet to go in/out of the pop door in the coop. Sour still mothers them a bit but has pretty much decided she wants to be a free woman soon. She goes into the coop at night, but her babies don't know to follow her. When it starts to get dark, I find them huddled together on top of the nesting boxes. I gather them up and set them on the roost beside Sour, and move a cranky hen or two as she lets her babies cuddle under her wing. Tonight, after the 4th night of this, they saw me coming and moved toward me. Even if they don't know about the door yet, at least they know how to get inside where it's warm. In the morning, everyone is in such a mobbed rush to get out of the door that the babies stay very high on the roosts to keep out of the whole mess, so I fetch them and set them down by their mama.

I'm going to introduce the Andalusians to everyone else soon, but wanted to get some of my crazy work out of the way so I could pay attention to them and intervene if necessary. They haven't been with any of the others at all, but they watch through the wire like they want to be part of the group.

Sweet! Good luck to them! Ive been really lucky in my integrations, honestly. And by now my girls are used to teeny babies. Hopefully yours are too!
We're having a battle with racoons again. They ate all my EE chicks and my old girl "grandma".

Ate the food in the trap but must be so big the door wouldn't close so they just backed out.

DANG! That sticks, i am so sorry :( If you catch them make coon skin blankets for the girls to sleep under at night.

That's one problem I don't have out where I'm at. I just have everything else - which is why my coops and runs are fortresses! No free ranging out here...

oh and here are some pics of the new happy accidents, Pepper and Pickle. (because they are porkchops babies and all of the showgirls for some reason have "p" names that are food related besides priscilla")

So now we have Priscilla, Porkchop, Pineapple, Pizza, Peaches, Pickle, and Pepper.

I think Pepper is blue and has a vaulted skull and Pickle might be black
So freakin adorable!!!
Oh, and I don't know how close my brabanter is to laying, but today she was singing in the nest while a couple of other hens popped out breakfast. It was about the most horrible jungle squawk I've heard in a long time. That could be a problem.
Uh oh!
Thanks for asking! I think the worst might be over already actually some of my sneezers have stopped sneezing and my swollen faced girls are not so swollen faced today. A couple of my hatchery stock birds actually didn't get sick or show any symptoms so I'm gonna keep an eye on them to see if they start sneezing or anything. Overall I and the chickens are in much better spirits about the whole thing. Also none of the three babies have gotten sick yet which I find shocking considering how terribly ill a couple of the grown up birds have been!
Good to hear they are doing better and the babies didn't get sick!
Heres a couple more cute mama pics for tonight. Her first time teaching them to roost! This bird is an amazing mother

Ya I don't free range mine out here either. I haven't seen any coon tracks since we moved up here but the coyotes and mountain lions mean no free ranging birds out here for sure. :(

cute little chickies, aubrey.

Yes, I think it's good to have her separate from the flock to reduce the chance of the others getting it. You probably want to treat everyone with an antibiotic. Some of the others on here might have an idea of what one to get. I don't have experience with that.

I finally posted 4 chickens on craigslist tonight. I guess I've been procrastinating again. 2 SLWs, 1 Welsummer, and 1 Easter Egger.

Here is one of my australorps molting. Poor thing has lost most of her neck feathers in the back. She's the sorriest looking one so far.

Here's one of the silkies on the nest. I think she's laid two eggs so far. I haven't noticed any of the other silkies on the nest yet.

First of all, keep her dry and comfortable. That's the most important. I treated mine with both Sulmet and Duramycin at the same time, in the water, for 2 days, and I treated the entire flock. You can buy both of those at Green's Feed: Sulmet is in a white bottle with blue lettering, and Duramycin is in a yellow envelope. Then for a week after that, I mixed plain yogurt with the feed until it was a chunky mess. They loved it. If it's the respiratory infection that we seem to be getting, she will get over it, but the other birds will probably get sick. Do the same for them. If it is bronchitis, it's viral and can't be "cured", so you just have to let it run its course. The comfortable living spaces and the antibiotics protect her from getting additional infections while her immunity is down.

IF they develop any other signs, such as floppy necks, a stink you can't tolerate, feathers dropping off, bloody stools... anything that doesn't look like a really super bad cold... message me or call me and I'll look it up in my chicken health handbook.

I think I might have gotten my first duck egg today. It's small and white, and first I thought it was Finger the minorca's egg, though it was in a bottom nesting box and Finger lays in the top ones. Kung Pao lays in the bottom, but her eggs are still teeny tiny. So I figured Finger had laid in the bottom, but I just gathered one of her eggs from the top box. It's the same size as Finger's (small pullet size,) and when I compare them, it has the tiniest cream tint to it. So faint that you'd think it was white if you didn't compare the eggs side by side.

Sheryl, what do you think? Also, I'm still very puzzled about whose egg that was when you came over to get grapes. I haven't seen another one like it since, but it was the size that Finger started out laying. She's now up to the size of a standard first pullet egg.

I guess maybe I could crack this one open and see if it has a donut spot in it. If it does, it's duck for sure.
