Mine is a Northern Catalpa. It has been here as long as the house has (30 years). It obviously is having no problems with the winters here in Reno. Genny you have seen this tree. It's the one in the front yard. It is half again taller than my 2 story house. I was doing some research on the Catalpa and it apparently will grow to 10' in 6 years and 20' in 10 years. It takes forever to leaf out in spring but this actually protects it really well from late frosts. It also means the tree blooms late which gives you flowers in summer when most everything else is done blooming. It will take 5-6 years though for it to mature and bloom.
If you are allergic to tree pollen be sure to plant this tree further out in your landscape. The pollen is really bad on my allergies but, as I mentioned, the pollen is released in just a couple of weeks so it is fine the rest of the year. It still has flowers right now but no more pollen.
Kathy those ducklings are adorable!!!
