Im sorry.
Hey sparks coop, im still working on getting a roo. Is the cochin standard or bantam?

Mine are too young to lay, so im not sure if their egg count would go down. But it is bad to spray them off with water? I think people give them baths and stuff. But my girls were really over heating today, and i sprayed a portion of the pen down. Most of them tolerated the water, but the ones that didnt dusted on the moist ground. They cooled ff quick, and i think it worked well. Tell me what you think.

Ke_ben, thse are beautiful roos. im sorry about your chickens.

we have two meat hogs, and they ate one a couple weeks ago when one went in the pen.

My egg production has gone back up to the highest level it has ever been. Half an egg a day. Heilo has started laying again after spending a couple of weeks raising chicks. Fuego is very happy to have her back.

I'm taking advantage of break time here.

What variety of Penedesenca do you have? I have a black hen with no mate but I don't know of anybody coming my way from Sparks or I would want one. I really like them, especially the crele.

laceynoelle, Tina has shown absolutely no interest in eating the chickens, she would rather have bananas, peel and all. We have had chickens in with her for a year and a half (since someone gave her to us

) and this is the first problem. She may not have done anything but that is all that we could figure out as a possibility since none of the others have shown any symptoms, but maybe it was just his time. Thanks for the sympathy anyway.

ke_ben, thats good. My sisters pot bellied pig was sweet, and we used to feed her jelly beans. She never had a problem with the other animals though, so it has to be an accident. How old is Tina?

KandJsmama, Im sorry. It hurts when you loose one.

Sorry you lost one, it was probably the heat even if it was a laying issue. It is too hot and we have added the humidity to the equation now so the misters aren't helping as much.

Here are some of the Ameraucanas and Lt. Brahmas looking a little like wet dogs from the misters. Do you see any cockerels that you want in the bunch anybody? They came from nice, almost robin-egg blue eggs.

And if you know anybody looking for a good, low mileage truck (28000 miles, 2007 diesel with 6 yr/100K ext. warranty), PM me quick. It is my wife's and one way or another it is gone, trade-in or sell outright, because she wants something different that gets better fuel economy. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the truck.

Good night all.

KandJsmama, Sorry about your girl. I agree most likely the heat. So far we still have the experience to go through ourselves. not looking forward to it. Every day we get to know our birds better and better. It is not going to be pleasant when one does go.

Lacey, Thanks for the notice. Not sure I can make it to that one but we will see.

Stay cool everyone. We actually went to the mall for a while yesterday just to find a spot out of the heat. It was warm even in the mall.

Just wanted to say Hello everyone. Hope you are all staying as cool as possible while enjoying the heat. Fan has gone out on our downstairs furnace - so no AC for the downstairs until I can call for repair on Monday. I have done all I can to see if I could fix it, and I just cannot.

Had a close call myself chicken-wise on Friday. Have a black EE chick, who wandered in to the garden and could not find her way out. She hunkered down in a small patch of shade but by the time I found her, she was in distress. She could not stand and was beyond panting. I picked her up and put her in a water container - about 4 inches deep, and in the shade. She laid in there for about 5 minutes before she could stand. Phew.

One thing I have been doing is soaking their scratch (I mix my own whole grains). I fill a bucket with their scratch and then water, let soak for a couple hours then feed. I am also soaking the grass hay I feed. Soaking helps hydrate the food and in turn the chickens.

My egg production seems to be the same so far, keep waiting for a drop. I average 10 a day but do have a day a week where I get 6 and a couple days I get 13 or 14.

My first set of 13 MF cochin eggs were not fertile. So I have trashed those, and Ruby is now setting on 12 new MF Cochin eggs. My sweet girls, Columbus and Dora are laying
hit.gif
I did not want them growing up so soon.

My silkied Ameraucana eggs did not hatch - second no go clutch - so I think I am done with that strain until I can ship a roo to me.

But the 4 of my eggs that were in the bator with the S.As did hatch, so I slipped them under my BO broody who hatched 6 last week. So she now has 10 - what a great mom.
